Club Notes - 30th September

Séamus Ó Muirithe RIP
Séamus Ó Muirithe RIP
On behalf of all in our club we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the family and many friends of Séamus Ó Muirithe who sadly passed away on Tuesday. One of life’s true gentlemen Seamie and his family have been associated with our club for many years and this tradition continues today with Seamie’s children and grandchildren continuing to wear our club jerseys.
Thar cheann bhaill an chlub, ba mhaith linn ár gcomhbhrón ó chroí a chur in iúl do mhuintir agus do chairde Shéamuis Uí Mhuirithe a chuaigh ar shlí na fírinne Dé Máirt. Duine fíor-uasal agus lách ab ea Seamie. Bhí dlúthbhaint aige féin agus a chlann lenár gclub le fada an lá. Tá an traidisiún sin beo fós sa lá atá inniu nuair a chaitheann a chlann agus a chlann clainne geansaithe ár gclub le bród.
Seamie first came to play with our club many years ago, when in 1965 along with a number of other players from An Rinn, he played on our under 16 Football team that won the Western Title, where they defeated Valley Rovers in the Western Final on a score line of 3:07 to 0:01. Unfortunately, they were defeated by Kilmacthomas in the County Final by a goal, and following this Seamie returned to play with An Rinn. Seamie returned to our club as a coach and mentor to many of our underage teams when his own children began playing for the club. Both Aonghus and Tiernan won numerous Underage A County Titles in both hurling and football before going on to win Minor and Under 21 A County Titles in what was a golden age for our club. Some of the performances in those County Hurling finals especially, will live long in the memory of those who saw them, and the brand of hurling and football these teams played was a source of immense pride for Seamie. Throughout this time Seamie understood that coaching was about far more than simply winning football or hurling matches. For Seamie the manner that the victory was achieved in, was of equal if not more importance that just winning. He had a deep appreciation and passion for the skills of our games and was intent on nurturing these skills in the players. He was helping the players to grow in confidence, learn the value of teamwork and friendship, and develop a love for our club and community. His patience, encouragement and good humour made a lasting impression on the many young players he helped develop.
It was only natural that Seamie would continue with these players as they moved onto play Senior Hurling for our club and he was part of our management team for three years that gave us many great days and victories in the Senior Hurling Championship, culminating in qualifying for the County Final in 2008. Unfortunately, we were narrowly defeated in a game played in horrific conditions, but that group of players who Seamie had helped develop would win numerous Senior Football Championships and sustain the club at Senior Hurling for many years. Throughout this time Seamie gave unselfishly of his time serving on both our Juvenile and Adult Committees where he helped out in any way with fundraising, organising club events or in whatever way he could.
A native of An Rinn, Seamie grew up in Tigh Mhuirithe, Heilbhic where his love and passion for our native language and culture was nurtured and this is something Seamie valued deeply. As someone who was so passionate about our native language it was only natural that Seamie would be a great supporter of Scoil Garbhain and he was very proud of the school's many successes.
He loved nothing more than chatting as Gaeilge whenever the opportunity arose and due to his interest in Current Affairs, he was always willing to discuss and indeed debate any aspect of Irish History and Politics, with those brave enough to enter into such a debate with him!
Fear de bhunadh na Rinne ab ea Seamie. Tógadh é i dTigh Mhuirithe i Heilbhic, áit ar cothaíodh a ghrá agus a dhúil don teanga agus don chultúr. Toisc gur fear tiomanta é i leith na Gaeilge, bhí sé an-dílis do Scoil Gharbháin. Thacaigh sé leo i gcónaí agus bhí sé an-bhródúil as a gcuid gaiscí. Ba mhór an meas a bhí ag Seamie ar an oidhreacht sin. Ba bhreá leis an Ghaeilge a labhairt nuair a bhíodh deis aige chuige. Ba mhór an tsuim a bhí aige i gcúrsaí reatha chomh maith. Níorbh fhada go mbíodh sé sásta dul i mbun cainte nó fiú má bhí gá, i mbun díospoireachta ar aon ábhar a bhain le stair na hÉireann nó cúrsaí polaitíochta, le haon duine a raibh sé de mhisneach acu tabhairt fé!
Like every GAA Club ours is built on people like Seamie — people who quietly give of their time and make a difference without ever seeking recognition. His contribution to our teams will not be forgotten, and the influence he had on the young players he coached will live on for many years to come.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Seamie's family at this very difficult time, especially to his wife Ann, and to Aonghus, Tiernan, Róisín and Siobhán. We hope they can take some comfort from knowing how highly regarded Seamie was and how much he contributed to our club and to the lives of so many young people.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
