U15 Football Championship
We had mixed fortunes for our under 15 footballers on Sunday morning when we lined out two teams in the championship. Our division 1 side recorded a convincing 7-04 to 1-01 victory down in Tramore to continue their great start to the championship.
Our division 4 team hosted Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower in the Burgery and despite a valiant effort, they lost out to our much bigger and physically stronger visitors.

Academy Update
Our pitches were closed on Saturday morning due to the heavy rain in the previous days so our academy had to be postponed. This didn't stop our under 10's though as they hit the beach in Ballinclamper to make sure that they didn't miss out on any valuable practice time. This was great idea from the coaches and the boys had great craic too!
We're back in action at our club grounds in the Burgery next Saturday morning for boys aged between 5 & 10. New members are always welcome and if you have any questions you can contact us through our Facebook page or by emailing abbeycourtyjuvenilesec@gmail.com.

Intercounty
Aaron Beresford, John Elstead and Brian Looby were all in action for the Waterford Senior Footballers last Sunday in Wexford where unfortunately they were beaten in a close game. This Sunday they welcome Sligo to Fraher Field.
The hurlers meanwhile are in action versus Kilkenny this coming Sunday also.

U15 Football Championship
Our division 1 team had a good start to their campaign, recording a 6-12 to 0-02 win over Gaultier. There's a lot more hard work to be put in but it was a great team performance and they now begin preparations for their next opponents, Tramore, this weekend.
Our division 4 team put in a spirited display against Naomh Brid in their first outing last Sunday morning in Modeligo. The result didn't go their way, losing 2-09 to 1-03, but a lot of these boys are under 15 again next year so each time they line out together they gain valuable experience.
It's great to see that our policy of developing our young players is being advanced through entering two teams at each age group in the juvenile championships. This means that all of our young players get as much game time as possible and have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Well done to all the boys and we look forward to following their journey through the year.

Academy Update - Nursery
We have started back with our U5/6 boys, and we are full steam ahead. We had 32 at last Saturday’s session. The lads are having great fun enjoying the various activities and games with our coaches. We are using stations to practice the basic skills of catching, kicking, running, and socialising, with a mixture of fun and mayhem thrown in for good measure. We’ll see everyone back on next Saturday the 11th at 10:30. Any newcomers always welcome. You can contact us through our Facebook page or by emailing abbeycourtyjuvenilesec@gmail.com.

Intercounty
The Waterford Senior hurlers were both in action last weekend. With our own Conor Prunty, Neil Montgomery and Michael Kiely all contributing to a great win over Tipperary. There’s a two week break now before the trip to Kilkenny.
The footballers meanwhile are in action versus Wexford this coming Sunday.

Please get out and support the boys as they have been putting in a lot of hard work over the last number of weeks. Best of luck to all involved!

Academy News
It was great to see our club grounds burst to life again on Saturday morning with the start of our 2022 academy. It was definitely more like winter than spring with a cold blustery wind but none the less, our young hurlers and footballers turned out in their droves.
Over 100 boys from ages 5 to 10 had great craic and enjoyed their morning thanks to well organized, fun filled sessions with our coaches. Well done to all the boys and see you next week again.
Thanks also to the crew that organized refreshments to provide treats for the players and much needed tea and coffee for the parents!
It was great to see so many new faces and new members are always welcome so come along any Saturday morning to join in the fun. If you want to find out more, contact us through our Facebook page or by emailing abbeycourtyjuvenilesec@gmail.com.

Academy 2022
The end of February always marks a key time in the club calendar because it's when our juvenile academy starts up. This means that Saturday mornings at the field will be full of fun and games for our youngest hurlers and footballers.
The 2022 academy starts on Saturday 26th February, and we cater for boys aged from 5 to 10 who would like to get active and build friendships in a safe, inclusive, team environment.
The start times are as follows: U8, U9 & U10 start at 10:00AM and U5, U6 & U7 start at 10:30AM.
The year kicks off with football so make sure the boys have their gumshields.

Club Notes - 9th February

County Champions
The year got off to the best possible start last Friday evening when our U20 footballers defeated Rathgormack 1-05 to 0-05 in the delayed 2021 County Final. It was a very hard-fought victory with the lads showing great composure and battling qualities to overcome excellent opponents. From the outset it was obvious we were in for a tough evening and so it proved as the hour progressed. We had to work hard for each score whilst at the other end the lads put in a fine defensive performance to limit opportunities for Rathgormack. It was clear that a goal would be a decisive score and so when Michael Kiely raised the green flag we were in a great position and thankfully we held out to the great joy of players and supporters alike.
This was a magnificent team performance and each and every player, along with Mark Ferncombe and his management team can be very proud of their efforts. The win caps a fine season for this great bunch of players who also of course won the hurling Western title.
It's a significant win as we won the very first under 20 County title having won the last under 21 title (we also contested the 1st final) and indeed, we won the only under 19 Championship that was played too. It was especially poignant to be the first team to receive the Greg Fives Cup and when DJ Kiely lifted the cup, we're sure the big man was smiling down with pride.
Also well done to man of the match Michael Kiely who’s had a busy few days!

Bingo
Sunday Night Bingo is back from next Sunday February 13th in the CBS Hall at 8pm. We are looking forward to welcoming all our regular players back and hopefully we will see a few new faces.

U12 Poc Fada
Our under 12 hurlers had their second annual Poc Fada last Saturday in very challenging conditions on Abbeyside beach. We had 22 players split into seven teams that took on the course in the heart of the parish.
The boys started under the ruins of the abbey and pucked their sliotars as far as far as the cove and back again. The team that completed the course in the fewest pucks would be crowed the winners. The tricky two-kilometre course meant that the boys had to consider many factors, from rocks to seaweed and even dog walkers, but the fierce headwind that they faced as they turned at the cove and struck for home, was the biggest challenge.
The practice that the boys have been putting in over the last few weeks stood them in good stead as there was some impressively long striking which led to low scoring from all the teams.
The winners on the day were Rory, Danny and Sean Óg, with Noah, Kieran and Tomas as runners up. Darrach, Fionn and Darragh coming in third place.
Well done to all the boys who took part!

2022 U12 Puc Fada Competitors

Intercounty
Both the Waterford Senior teams were in action over the weekend with Conor Prunty, Michael Kiely Neil Montgomery involved with the hurlers in their draw with Dublin in Parnell Park. Whilst Brian Looby and Aaron Beresford made the long trip to London with footballers, where unfortunately they suffered a 1 point defeat.
This weekend the hurlers are in action again versus Laois and we wish them the best of luck.

Club Notes - 2nd February

U20 Football
The U20 footballers play the Final of the 2021 county championship this coming Friday evening when facing Rathgormack in the Fraher Field at 19.30. All the best to Mark Ferncombe and his team. If you can please get along to support the lads and hopefully we’ll have the Greg Fives cup back home Friday night.

Jack The Joker
The jackpot in the Jack The Joker was won last Monday when Louise O Donnell was drawn and picked number 40 which when turned was the Joker. Pat Buckley and Geraldine Briggs both also won €25 each. This was the last draw in the Joker and we will be looking at introducing a new initiative in the very near future.
