Championship 2022
All 3 Adult teams were in action last weekend. The Seniors registered a good victory over The Brickies on Sunday and are now qualified for the quarter finals which are fixed for a few weeks time.
The Intermediates began their campaign on Friday evening with a game against Colligan in Fraher Field. After a competitive game we came up just short. Next up is a local derby against Dungarvan on Friday.
On Saturday afternoon the Junior’s travelled to Colligan to take on Affane. After a slow start, we found ourselves 7 points down at half time having played with a strong breeze. The 2nd half performance was superb, and we managed to draw level entering injury time. Unfortunately, however Affane had one last attack which yielded the winning score. Defeat means we are now eliminated from the championship after 2 games. Many thanks to the players and mentors for their efforts.
Meanwhile the Minors continued their championship with a trip to The Brickies on Sunday where the hosts won by 7 points.

U15 Hurling Championship
The division U15 division two boys overcame Sacred Heart last Friday (23rd Sept) in Carriganore to qualify for the county final.  It was a tough physical encounter, but the Abbeyside boys fronted up and won in convincing fashion with a final score of 3-12 to 0-10.
The county final is fixed for 8pm on Thursday evening in Fraher Field where they play Clonea Power.  There has been nothing between the teams this season, so we wish the lads the best of luck and we ask all our members and friends to go over to Fraher Field on Thursday evening to support the lads.

U14 Championship
Preparations are well underway for the U14 hurling and football championships.  The championships are being run off quickly this year but none the less the boys will be line out and give it their all to take the titles.  Best of luck to the players and coaching teams.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
The U12 the division 1 hurlers played the county semi final against De la Salle, last Friday in the Burgery.  They got off to a good start with an early goal and went on to take the victory with a score line of 3:17 to 2:03.  The boys now have the county final against Ballygunner at 1pm on Saturday in Carriganore.
Hopefully we’ll have two U12 county finals to play on Saturday as Our U12 division 5 hurlers play their own county semi final, also against De la Salle, in Gracedieu on Monday (26th Sept).  Keep an eye on social media for an update on how the boys got on.

Academy Update
As well as our usual Saturday morning academy sessions the U8s were on the road again as they travelled to Carriganore to play in a blitz organized by Déise Óg.  It’s great for the boys to take part in these blitzes because it gives them the opportunity to play teams that they may not normally encounter.

Meanwhile the Minors continued their championship with a trip to Gaultier on Sunday where the hosts won by four points.

All the above are in action again this weekend with the Intermediates also entering the fray.

U15 Hurling Championship

Our U15 boys had mixed fortunes in the knockout stage of the championship in the past week.  Last Wednesday (14th Sept) the division 2 team played out an exciting encounter against a big physical St. Mary’s.  The group team from mid-county pushed our boys all the way to injury time when a well taken free clinched the victory for the village lads with a score of 2-12 to 3-08.  They now go on to play Sacred Heart in the semi final on Friday evening in Carriganore.  Throw-in is at 6:15pm so please go along and give the boys the support they deserve.

On Saturday morning (17th Sept) in Cappoquin our division 4 hurlers bowed out of the championship in a hotly contested plate semi final against Clashmore.  Having lost to Clashmore in the final match of the round robin stage the boys really upped their game  and lead for good spells of the game.  After a really great performance they sadly lost out by the narrowest of margins finishing on 0-09 to 2-02.  This group can hold their heads high after putting in a lot of hard work through the season and showing great development as the season progressed.  Well done to all.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues

Our U12 division 1 team travelled to Ballygunner on Friday evening to play the last game of the round robin matches in the county hurling league.  The Abbeyside boys fought hard and played some great hurling but Ballygunner took the victory in the end by 3-08 to 1-07.

Both our division 1 and division 4 teams have made the semi final stages in the U12 leagues and both teams face De la Salle at the weekend.

U11 Tournament Victory in Cork

The U11’s made the quick switch from hurling to football last week and had only two training sessions before travelling to the outskirts of Cork city to take on some top quality competition in the annual Mick O’ Leary tournament, hosted by Glanbia Football Club.  The tournament consisted of some of the top clubs around the country, including Cuala (Dublin), Lucan Sarsfields (Kildare), St. Finbarrs (Cork).  This level of opposition didn’t deter the boys from Ballinacourty though as they topped their group, beating Valley Rovers, St. Finbarr’s and Lucan Sarsfields.  They were drawn against the famous Austin Stack’s in the semi final and overcame the challenge with quality football and impressive work rate.  The final saw the lads take on the hosts Glanmire and after a very tough encounter Ballinacourty claimed the victory and brought the cup back to our parish.  This was a great achievement from this group and it’s well deserved after the dedication and effort that they have put in throughout the season.

Victorious U11 Footballers

Academy Update

Saturday was busy for our academy teams with the U7’s welcoming our neighbours Stradbally to the Burgery where they played loads of games in very well run blitz.  The boys all had great fun and really enjoyed the games in the lovely weather.

Meanwhile, the U8’s made the trip to Tramore to play a hurling blitz against Micheál MacCraith Tramore and Ballygunner.  The boys really enjoyed the games and competed very well with the eastern clubs and deserved the refreshments afterwards.  We knew that U8’s were well able to hurl but they also showed that they have the makings of formidable choir.  On the bus home they belted out the classics like “Up the Village” and “Everywhere we go…”.  It was a great morning and was enjoyed by all.

Our academy continues every Saturday morning from 10am and keep an eye out in the coming weeks for the return of our Mini All Ireland Football series.

Championship 2022
The football championships kick off this weekend with both the Senior and Junior A teams kicking off their campaigns.
The Seniors face Clashmore in Fraher Field at 13.45 on Sunday whilst the Juniors face off against Geraldine’s on Friday also in Fraher Field at 19.30.
Meanwhile the Minors had 2 games last week registering a draw against Clan na Gael and a very good victory over The Nire. This Sunday they travel to Gaultier for an 11.00 throw in.

U13 Hurling Championship
Even an orange weather warning on Sunday couldn’t deter the boys of the U13 division 4 panel from turning on style to claim a well deserved county title.  A determined St. Pats panel meant that our boys had more than the weather to worry about and both teams displayed great touch and striking in awful conditions.  Abbeyside held a narrow lead at half time and St. Pat’s came out firing well early in the second half.  The lads responded and upped the efforts and with the help of four goals, went on to claim the title for the village with a score of 5-08 to 1-05.  Rory Mulcahy raised the cup on behalf of his team mates and spoke really well, thanking his coaches and St. Pat’s for a very sporting contest.
The other half of our U13 group were in action on Thursday evening in Carriganore in the division 1 county semi final, where they played Mount Sion in a fixture that was originally due to take place on the previous Tuesday. This really was an exciting encounter and the game ebbed and flowed as both teams wrestled for control.  It was great to see such a high level of skill and work rate from a group of young boys but unfortunately, it was not to be for our lads.  Half way though the second half there was only a point between the two teams but a couple of quick goals saw Mount Sion take a lead that the boys weren’t able to overcome.  The disappointment after the game was obvious but the panel can hold their heads high.  They will be in the mix for county titles again in the future, there’s no doubt about that!
The U13 championships have now come to an end and all the players, coaches and people involved with this group can look back on a very successfully year.  Between the division 1 & division 4 panels, they’ve won three out of the four championships that they entered in hurling and football which is an amazing return.  Just as important though is how enjoyable it was for the boys and how much they developed as a team and as individuals throughout the year.  Well done to all involved.

U13 County Hurling Division 4 Champions, 2022

U15 Hurling Championship
Knockout hurling is fast approaching for both of our U15 panels.  The division 4 boys have one match remaining in the round robin phase, travelling to Clashmore on Monday (12th). The division 2/3 team have a home quarter final on Wednesday (14th) against St. Mary’s with throw-in at 6:15pm.  We ask all our members and friends to make an effort to get along and support both of our U15 teams in the coming weeks.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
Neither of our U12 teams saw any action this week but the division 1 team travel to Ballygunner on Friday evening for the final match of the league section.  Both the division 1 and division 5 teams have qualified for their respective semi finals and await the fixtures to see who they play.
Our U11 division 1 team played out an epic battle against Ballygunner on Friday in the Burgery.  The hurling was fast and fierce and the match ended in a draw with impressive scoring of 1-10 a piece.
Our division 5 U11 boys played Ballyduff Upper, and despite battling hard we lost out in the end.
Both U11 teams have shown great progress and improvement in their skills and teamwork throughout the year which is testament to their dedication and the guidance from the coaching team.

Academy Update
Saturday morning was busy as usual with boys from 5 to 10 honing their skills and having fun in the unseasonably warm weather.  Plans are afoot for the mini All Ireland football competition
The U9’s gathered at the clubhouse before jumping on a bus to Castlecomer where they played Erin’s Own in a hurling blitz.  The boys had great craic in all the matches that they played against a traditional hurling stronghold in Kilkenny and they represented the club very well indeed!  These boys will have long playing careers ahead of them but it has also emerged that some could also have a career in the music industry based on the sing-song on the bus on the way home.  Days like this are all about making memories with your team mates and building a team spirit, well done to the coaches for organizing.

Minor Hurling Championship
The Minor hurlers had a great victory over Brickey Rangers in the Division 1 Plate Final last Wednesday. All in all, the lads can certainly take some massive positives from their championship endeavours, and it is very encouraging to see a very definite progression in this group in the 2-year period since their U15 championship. There were some very impressive displays throughout the championship and with a bit more luck here and there we might well have qualified for the semi-finals. However, finding ourselves in the Plate presented a great opportunity to collect some silverware, and it was great to see the opportunity grabbed with both hands. Following victory over Lismore, we saved our best display of the year for the final where we dominated larger parts of the game and came away with an 11-point victory. Well done to players and management.

U15 Hurling Championship
Only one of our under 15 teams saw action at the weekend.  It was the turn of our division 4 team, who played our neighbours Stradbally in the Burgery.  They boys turned in a great display to take a convincing victory with a score line of 6-06 to 4-04.

U13 County Semi Finals
The boys of the under 13 panel have been busy preparing for their county semi finals which take place this week.  The division 1 team travelled to Carriganore on Monday (5th September) to play Mount Sion.  The division 4 boys play Ardmore on Tuesday (6th September) at 6:45pm in Fraher Field.  Please come out and support our boys!

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
There was no matches for the under 11 teams this week but they continue their preparations for their next round.
In the under 12 league the division 1 team hosted Lismore in the Burgery on Friday evening and after a shaky start that saw them concede an early goal, they rallied well to win by 4-08 to 1-04.
The other half of our under 12 group travelled to Ballybeg to take on St. Saviours on Saturday morning.  They lost narrowly after a tough physical encounter but it was great to see the Abbeyside boys standing up to the challenge and show a “never say die” attitude.

Academy
Having recently switched to the big ball the under 9 panel played a blitz in the field on Saturday at midday.  The visitors were Dungarvan, St. Mary’s and the Nire.  Our lads played super football and had great fun in between the showers of rain – well done boys!
Our academy continues as usual every Saturday morning from 10am.

Handball Title
Congratulations to Jack Hurney, who plays with our under 13’s, on winning a Munster handball title on Sunday with his team mate Dara Gough.
