Camogie 2023 Highlights
What a year 2023 was for Abbeyside Camogie Club! The club fielded teams of various age groups from U6 right through to adult junior camogie. We had great success with many age groups reaching both county semi finals and finals. While all of this is fantastic for the club, one of our main highlights was our minor team being fielded this year after having to unfortunately withdraw in 2022, so well done to the girls and management team on this achievement!

We had two successful fundraisers throughout the year. On Friday the 17th of February, we had our annual music quiz which was hosted by Bob O’ Brien. Thank you to all who helped support this in any way, from the local businesses that sponsored prizes to all of the kind donations and of course to our incredible committee for putting the night together, it was a great success and could not have been done without all of the help both behind the scenes and on the night!

In addition to the quiz, on Monday the 30th of October, we held our annual sponsored walk in Clonea. We were blessed with the weather on the day and some of our younger members even dressed up in their Halloween costumes for the occasion. It was a great success and once again we would like to thank all who supported this walk. All of the money raised is a great help to all of our age groups and to the club in general.

In March, the club took part in the local St. Patrick’s Day parade. This is always a great day out for the club and for our juvenile girls. A big thank you to all of the girls and looking forward to taking part in the parade again this year!

On the May bank holiday weekend, we were thrilled to host the Paula Collins Memorial Tournament. What a fantastic day it turned out to be. On the day, with over 90 Abbeyside camogie players taking part, there was great community spirit, just what Paula represented during her time coaching with Abbeyside Camogie. We would once again like to thank all that were involved in making this day such a huge success. A special mention to the Collins and Nugent families for their support on the day also.

July saw the launch of our away jerseys. A massive thank you once again to Brendan Cosgrave at Ballycoe Landscaping for the sponsorship. This was and still is greatly appreciated. It is fantastic to see all of our members wearing these jerseys. These jerseys are special to us as a club as they include the names of two of our much loved and missed members and players, Shauna McGrath and Laura Cliffe. As part of the jersey sales, O’ Reilly sports kindly donated a portion of the sales to the clubs charity of choice. This donation was shared between the McGrath and Cliffe families towards a charity of their choice. The McGrath family chose Sesame Early Intervention Service and the Cliffe family chose the Lions Club. A cheque with the value of €300 went to each charity back in October. We would like to thank O’ Reilly sports and all who purchased one of our away jerseys. It is truely a lovely tribute to remember our Shauna and Laura.

Once again this year saw many of our club members from various age groups involved in both development squads and county teams. This is a testament to all of the hard work being completed by our coaches and girls. We want to congratulate all of you once again and the club is so proud of ye for all of the hard work that ye put in!

Our club goes from strength to strength, and is growing in numbers, we have a great group of girls who have fun learning the skills of camogie and making friends for life along the way!.

From all of us here at the club, we want to thank the coaches and the girls for all of their hard work both on and off the field and of course all of the parents and supporters who travel all over to support all of these incredible groups. This year, we are looking to recruit even more coaches for many of our underage groups so if anybody has interest in helping out please get in contact with us, through social media or our existing coaches, we would be delighted to have you on board.
We want to thank everyone for your continued support throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming all of you back in the coming weeks for another exciting year ahead.

On behalf of everyone in the club we’d like to offer our condolences to Michael Briggs and family on the death of his mother Catherine over the Christmas period. Michael is of course a former chairman, whilst all his children have worn the club jersey over the years.
