Senior Hurling
Last Sunday we travelled east to Walsh Park to take on Mount Sion in the County Senior hurling semifinal.  Conditions were less than ideal with a strong wind blowing towards the city end.  And it was into this wind we faced in the 1st half, which meant to dig deep to keep in touch with our opponents.  This the lads did superbly and a series of excellently taken points, and a green flag allied to excellent defending left us adrift by the minimum at half time.  With the foundations laid we pushed on in the 2nd half and having taken the lead shortly after the resumption pulled away to record a 10-point victory 3-20 to 0-19.
And so, all roads now lead to famed Dan Fraher Field next Sunday, where once again we go in search of that elusive 1st Senior hurling title against Ballygunner. 1927 was the first recorded hurling championship game played by Abbeyside, in the intervening 97 years we have played in just 6 senior finals, 1955, 1957, 1964, 1969, 2008 & 2018 and on each occasion unfortunately we came up short.
So, it is an all too rare occurrence that we appear on this stage, but history has no impact on the present and it does not weigh on this current group of players.  They will take the field next Sunday, with the support of an entire parish, compete for every ball, fight for every score and battle to the last.
So get the flags and bunting out, turn the village blue and gold and please do your best to get over to the Field next Sunday, these lads deserve all the support we can muster.

Academy
Our academy continues every Saturday morning for boys between the ages of 5 and 10.  It's always a really fun and enjoyable experience for the children who come along so make sure to bring your child so that they can join in the fun and benefit from healthy activities and making friends.

U10
We brought 26 boys down to Ballygunner on Saturday morning for a feast of U10 hurling. The games against our city rivals were hotly contested and played with a great spirit of fun but no quarter given or asked for amongst the teams and each of the boys gave it their all to win the ball, move it to a teammate and shoot for a score.  The Village boys really gave a great account of themselves.  Next week sees the boys heading city-side again as they go to Mount Sion to take part in the annual Dickie Roche memorial tournament.  It promises to be a really enjoyable day.

U10s in Ballygunner

U12
The last week saw the U12s continue with their run of games.  First up was a rematch with St Pats that didn’t disappoint for those watching.  Both teams pushed and tested each other but couldn’t be separated at the final whistle.
On Sunday, the lads switched to hurling and made the trip to Mount Sion as the opening act, before heading into Walsh Park for the same senior fixture.  Another closely contested game by both teams with some good hurling in the mix.

U13
The division 4 boys travelled to Portlaw last Monday (19th Aug) and put in a good performance but the result went the way of the home side.  Our boys have been doing well though and are now in with a shout in the plate section of the competition.  On the same night, Lismore came to the Burgery to play our division 1 team but the referee was unable to attend so the fixture will be played on Wednesday (28th Aug).

U15
The U15 panel travel to Roanmore on Monday evening (26th Aug) for the final match of the round robin section of the division 1 hurling championship.  The result will determine their seeding for the semi final draw so best of luck boys.

County Duty
It was a busy day of underage intercounty hurling on Saturday when we had no less than nine boys representing their county across the U14 and U15 age grades.
In the Arrabawn Cup, for U15's, we had Alex Doyle, Seán Óg O'Regan, Darragh Sullivan, Jack Hurney and Owen Morrissey from Abbeyside.
In the Tony Forristal/Sonny Walsh tournaments, for U14's, we had four boys in action.  Fionnán Murray and Killian Hagan were on the team that lost out in the semi final of the Tony Forristal tournament to a Kilkenny side that went on to win the final.  Dara Byrne and Rian Cliffe played on the team that won the Sonny Walsh tournament outright, beating Dublin by a point in what was a very entertaining final.
Well done to all the boys across both age groups.  It's fantastic to have so many of our young hurlers representing our club at intercounty level.  It's a tribute to their dedication and to the support and encouragement from their families.

L to R: Fionnán Murray, Dara Byrne, Rian Cliffe & Killian Hagan

Senior County Final
It was wonderful to see so many children decked out in the club colours on Sunday in Walsh Park supporting our senior hurlers in the county semi final.  It's fair to say that the workrate, skill and team play that the senior panel have shown through the championship is a great example to all of our juvenile members so we ask all families associated with our club to get over to Fraher Field next Sunday and bring as much colour and noise as you can muster.  Up the Village!!!

"Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"
A hectic weekend of activity on the playing fields concluded in Cappoquin on Sunday afternoon as our Junior B Hurling team exited the championship following a defeat to Lismore in the Western Final. Whilst defeat was our lot on the day, we would like to thank the players and management for the fantastic year they gave us. Many young players got their first taste of adult hurling this year and have a bright future ahead in our club. We wish Lismore the best of luck in the County Final.
Well done to our senior and junior A hurlers on their wins over the weekend. A highlight of the weekend was seeing young Jack McGrath back on the playing fields on Friday night. All in our club are thrilled to see Jack back in the club jersey after some difficult years.
We look forward to this weekend's fixtures as our Junior A Hurling team take in Kilrossanty on Friday night in Fraher Field and our Senior Hurlers travel to Walsh Park on Sunday in the County Semi Final.
Please come out and show your support for our teams this weekend.

Academy
Our academy was scaled down a bit last weekend because our grounds were in use for the Jim Power U14 intercounty football tournament. We'll be back in action this Saturday and full of energy with our young hurlers and footballers so come out and join in the fun.

U8's on the Big Stage
The local derby in the senior hurling championship brought a very big crowd to Fraher Field on Saturday and it was heartening to see so many children milling around with hurleys wearing the blue and gold. Our mighty U8 hurlers took centre stage at half time when they played our neighbours from Dungarvan GAA in an exhibition match. It may have been only a 10 minute game but it was crammed with pulling, blocking and striking and it was plain to see that all the players really enjoyed it. They were so engrossed in the match that the PA announcer on the night had to make a number of calls for them to clear the pitch so that the senior match could resume! Well done to the boys and the coaches and also the county board for facilitating this type of event.

U9
Sunday morning saw our Under-9 hurlers take to the field in Ballymacarbry for a blitz. Unfortunately, one of the opposing teams was forced to pulled out at the last minute. However we got 2 games going by drafting in some Under-10 and Under-11 lads from both Abbeyside and Fourmilewater who just happened to have their helmets and hurleys in the car, “just in case”!!
Both teams played with plenty of energy, and the blend of ages worked surprisingly well, making for a morning of enjoyable hurling. There was plenty of competitive edge on show with all the sets of brothers on the pitch, and the younger lads on both teams were unwilling to take a backward step from the older lads. I suspect there was plenty of debate about some of the tackles in a number of the cars on the way home!!
Big thank you to Fourmilewater for their hospitality on the morning and great attitude and encouragement on the sidelines for all the players.

U10
Our U10's boy have been very busy with matches lately and there are yet more to come. On Saturday morning they host Ballygunner in round 3 of the Déise Óg hurling series and the following Saturday the boys will travel to represent our club in the annual Dick Roche tournament in Mount Sion. There will be plenty time for practice in between and no doubt the boys will make the most of it.

U12
Our U12s have been kept busy on the road with games over the last while. In hurling, they travelled to Ballyduff Upper which saw the lads put on a great display. In football, they travelled to De La Salle and picked up where the hurling left off and put on another impressive display.

U12 Footballers in De La Salle

U15
Our U15 hurlers travelled to Ballygunner on Monday 12th August in round 6 of the division 1 hurling championship. The city team claimed the victory on the night, but our boys are still focused on driving forward to try and secure a place in the semi finals. They play the last round robin match against Roanmore, in Waterford, on 26th August.

U11
Our under 11 team recently participated in two exciting Munster GAA blitzes at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. On Tuesday, the boys proudly represented our club in football, facing teams from Douglas, St. Vincents, and Kilrossanty. All the boys showcased great skills and represented their club fantastically.
The following Friday, the focus shifted to hurling, with matches against Mt. Sion, Sars, and Mullinahone. The team demonstrated great determination, making the most of the opportunity to play at this fantastic venue.
In addition to the matches, Tuesday also included a tour of Páirc Uí Chaoimh's facilities. The players explored the dressing rooms, gym and media room and experienced the thrill of running out through the players' tunnel. A group photo on the iconic pitch was taken before the games.
The coaches would like to thank the parents for bringing the players to the venue and supporting them throughout the two days. The boys' performances were a credit to their club and community, making the events a memorable experience for everyone involved. No doubt, many of them will play on this pitch in even bigger games in the future.

U7
Our U7 boys group have been very busy over the month of July.
We hosted the final blitz of the Waterford GAA Go Games at our own club grounds on Wednesday the 24th of July.
We have played two hurling and two football blitzes over the month of July and the boys have really enjoyed them and come on so much.
On Wednesday we hosted St.Patrick’s and St. Oliver’s and the boys showed some great skills and determination on the field on the night. These games showed us the importance of the basic skills in our games.
Although we had lots away on holidays we still fielded 2 teams and it was great fun to see the boys compete against each other.
We would like to thank all the support we got from parents over the last 4 weeks and especially Ashling and Máire who helped out with refreshments after the matches on the night.
We would also like to thank Jonathan in Eurospar for providing a goodie bag for each participating child and some refreshments for the adults . Well done everyone.

U10
On Saturday morning the boys played the first round of the Deise Óg U10 hurling series. We welcomed two of our close neighbours, Dungarvan and St. Pats, to the Burgery and each of our two teams played two matches giving them an hour of enjoyable hurling. The field was in great nick and this, along with the skill of the boys meant that the sliotar didn't stop for the hour. It was encouraging to see some proper teamwork emerging in the group. On a number of occasions the Abbeyside boys picked each other out to create scores and also worked hard to support each other in defence. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning.

U13
The boys continue their training programme in preparation for the next round of their championship on Monday evening (5th Aug). The division 1 team host Ballygunner while the second team host Clashmore/Kinsalebeg. Good luck lads.

U15
Clan na Gael were the visitors to the field on Monday night (29th July) in round 5 of the division 1 U15 hurling championship. Keep an eye on our socials for updates

Well Kids!
The "Well Kids!" programme is an initiative driven by Déise Óg where children of four years old can begin to experience our games in a fun and accessible way through a variety of games and activities. It's a fantastic way to introduce your child to team activities and exercise and a safe and fun environment. Call out any Saturday morning at 10:30am and there's no need to bring any equipment, everything will be provided.

U10
It has been an unbelievably busy week for our U10 hurlers. On Monday (15th July) they played a Cappoquin and the Brickeys in Cappoquin. Thursday (18th July) saw them host Clan na Gael and St. Pats in the Burgery and on Saturday (20th July) they embarked on a mighty day out!  They piled onto the bus in Coolagh at 11:30 and headed across the border into Kilkenny. They played a really well organised blitz hosted by James Stephens, with Mooncoin also taking part. Even though a lot of the panel are away on holidays etc we were still able to field two teams and competed really well with our Kilkenny counterparts. It was lovely to see the skills from all the boys as well as the spirit in which the games were played.
James Stephens laid on a fantastic spread of refreshments afterwards which was really appreciated by everyone.
The boys didn't hang around too long though because next on the itinerary (after a quick pit stop in McDonalds) was Walsh Park to support our seniors in the first round of the championship. Big thanks to Joe Cleary who kept a steady pace on the bus and ensured we were on schedule.
The young Village boys sang and chanted all the way to Keane's Road and took up a good vantage point in the stand to cheer on their clubmates against Ferrybank. It was lovely to see all the blue and gold jerseys invade the pitch at half time for a puck around and a convincing win for the seniors capped off a fantastic day of hurling, friendship and fun. The boys were a credit to the club throughout the day and are looking forward to continuing their hurling throughout the summer. They play Dungarvan and St Pats this coming Saturday. Keep it going boys!
