Alice Marie O'Connor RIP
On Friday last we lost of one of the great personalities of Abbeyside, the late Alice Marie O'Connor. For decades Alice Marie worked in O'Connor’s Bar which had been previously run by her late mother and subsequently her brother Michael where she endeared herself to literally thousands of customers through her unique warm and caring personality. Alice Marie had a keen and genuine interest in the lives of all her customers and would regularly ask how they were getting on, taking great delight in their successes, especially those on the sporting front, as Alice was a lover of all sports. This is of course no surprise as her brothers were fantastic sportsmen, with Johnny and Paddy achieving a notable double in 1948 when Johnny won a Senior All Ireland hurling medal and Paddy won a Minor All Ireland on the same day. The jerseys worn by her brothers hang proudly in the pub and the medals were greatly treasured possessions of Alice Marie. Outside of GAA, Alice Marie had a great interest in horse racing and greyhound racing, where of course her brother Johnny trained the winner of the 1973 English Derby, Patricia's Hope. The week of Cheltenham or the St Stephens Day racing in O’Connor’s were huge occasions along with many other race meetings and Alice Marie always took great delight when a local trainer or owner would have a winner.
As mentioned already the GAA was Alice's great passion and she loved travelling to Thurles or Croke Park to support the Waterford Hurling teams, returning home full of pride and delight when they won, especially if there was an Abbeyside player involved. O'Connor’s Bar has seen many great nights of celebration for our club down the years and Alice would insist on filling the County Cups, where refusing to take a drink could often mean getting some of it poured over your head!! It was all part of her great sense of fun and pride in the team's achievements. Alice always loved welcoming GAA people from near and far into the bar, especially the visits of those who hurled with and against her brothers aswell as players of more recent times. The music sessions of Paddy Joe Ryan and the craic and banter that went with them were a huge source of pleasure for Alice Marie.
Having spent her life working in the bar, it was indeed fitting that Alice Marie spent her final months at home in Sexton Street where the care she received from Brian and Kay were a great comfort to her. No doubt she was kept up to date with all the news by Jim Egan, her sidekick in O’Connor’s for as long as we can all remember.
Without a shadow of a doubt Abbeyside lost one of our great characters today. To Brian, Kay and all Alice Marie's relatives we send our deepest sympathies. Gan dabht ar bith ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

Condolences
We’d also like to express our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of the late James Buckley who passed away this week. James' sons Niall and Darragh are valued club players and both have helped the club to win titles in hurling and football. Our thoughts are with all at this difficult time.

U15 Hurling Championship
The division 2/3 team recorded a convincing victory against Cappoquin in the Burgery last Monday (22nd August) while our division 4 team did not have a game.

U13 County Semi Finals
Both U13 teams take part in county semi finals next week. The division 4 boys take on Ardmore and the division 1 team play Mount Sion. Keep an eye on social media for confirmation of the fixture and venues.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
The division 1 panel made the short trip down the coast to play Stradbally last Friday and took the victory with a score line of 0-13 to 1-07. The division 5 boys travelled to Colligan to play St Pats in a challenge that was really well contested as they clinched the victory.

Senior Hurling Championship
The Senior hurlers came through a tough battle with Dunhill last Sunday and we now face Roanmore in the County Quarter final next Saturday. Victory came at a high cost with another slew of injuries and we wish all the lads the very best in their respective recoveries.

Junior Hurling Championship
The Junior B team played their final game last Friday when they were beaten by An Rinn.  We’d like to thank all the players and management for their efforts throughout the year.

This Saturday the Junior A’s take on Kilrossanty in the Western Semi Final.

Summer Camp
The field was a hive of activity during our recent Summer Camp with large numbers having a great time. We’d like to thank Michael O Halloran, Brian Looby, Seanie Callaghan, Eoin Kiely, Darragh Walsh, Rosin Tobin and Aisling Tobin for all their efforts and also to our 3 intercounty players, Michael Kiely, Neil Montgomery and Conor Prunty who visited.

U15 Hurling Championship
Neither of our under 15 teams saw any action on Monday (15th August) as all championship matches were postponed at the last minute by Bord na nÓg, due to the risk of thunder storms.
The division 2/3 team take on Cappoquin in the Burgery on Monday 22nd.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
Both U12 teams are on the road this coming Friday as they take on Stradbally and St. Saviours.

The U11 division 1 team had two tough challenges against Mount Sion and Lismore during the week.  They lost out in both matches but continue to show good improvement and as they progress through the season.
The division 5 were very unlucky to lose out in Ardmore.  They were two points up in injury time and Ardmore struck with a goal from a free to take the win by the narrowest of margins.

Academy Update
It was a typically busy week for our academy and after a good spell of hurling, our under 10s returned to football by taking part in the Dungarvan GAA football tournament last Saturday. The morning saw some exciting games played by the 15 teams involved, and the spectators got a great display of football by the young lads. Ballinacourty’s two teams put in solid performances to reach the cup semi-final and the shield semi only narrowly missing out in a place in both finals. Well done to all involved.

The field was busy on Saturday morning with the usual academy coaching sessions and the under 8’s welcomed Ballygunner for a hurling blitz.  We had 32 boys so we fielded four teams who played very good hurling and competed very well with our friends from the east of the county.  Well done to all.

Senior Hurling Championship
The Senior hurlers recorded their first championship victory this year when we defeated Tallow after a hard-fought encounter last Sunday afternoon in Fraher Field. Conditions on the day were less than ideal, with stifling heat enveloping the ground. It was tough enough going on the bank, so one can only imagine what it was like on the field of play.  In a tit for tat first half Mark Ferncombe and Willie Beresford raised green flags to see us going in at the break with a 2 point lead. The 2nd half was a real battle after being reduced to 14 early on. But fair play to the lads they really dug in and in the end came away with a 3 point victory. The win secures 2nd place in the group and wins us the Division 2 League title. Next up is Dunhill in the provisional quarter final this coming Sunday.
Team: Aaron Beresford, Colin Foley, Conor Prunty, Brian Looby, Daire Slevin, Darragh McGrath, Tom Looby, Sean Whelan Barrett, John Elstead, Jack McGrath, Michael O Halloran, Neil Montgomery, Michael Kiely, Mark Ferncombe, Willie Beresford.
Subs: Patrick Hurney & Shane Ahern.

Junior Hurling Championship
The Junior B team were in action versus Fourmilewater last Friday evening. Whilst defeat was ultimately our lot there were very definite signs of progression. After a very disappointing result last time out the team put in a much-improved performance and pushed a very strong opposition all the way.
An Rinn provide the opposition next Friday.

Minor Hurling Championship
De La Salle were the visitors to The Burgery last Wednesday for the latest round of the Division 1 championship. On a gorgeous evening for hurling there was a large crowd present and they were treated to a very entertaining game. Unfortunately in the end we went down to a four point defeat and we look forward now to the next game against The Brickies.

Wedding Bells
Heartiest congratulation to Stephen Enright and Emma Dempsey who were married last Thursday. We wish them all the best in their future life together.

The next draw takes place on 7th September and once again we’d like to thank all our sellers and those who support the draw.

Bingo
Please note that this week our regular Sunday Night Bingo will take place in St Mary’s School. Eyes down at the usual time of 8pm.

U15 Hurling Championship
Both U15 teams are in action this week with the division 2/3 team playing away to Clonea Power and the division 4 team playing away to Clashmore.  Both fixtures throw in at 7pm on Monday 15th August.
Correction: In last week’s notes a championship result between our U15 division 4 team and Tramore was recorded as a win for Tramore.  Tramore actually couldn’t field a division 4 team so the match was conceded and the points will be awarded to Abbeyside.

U13 Hurling Championship
The division 1 boys were in action last week against Lismore and were unlucky to lose by the narrowest of margins, while the division 4 team took the points in Gracedieu against De La Salle.  Both our division 1 and division 4 teams have now qualified for the semi finals and will play Mount Sion and Ardmore respectively.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
Our U11 hurlers have a busy week ahead.  The division 1 panel have look forward to a visit from Mount Sion on Tuesday (16th) as well as an away fixture to Lismore on Friday (19th).  The division 5 boys travel out to play Ardmore on Friday evening (19th).

Academy Update
Notwithstanding the intense heat on Saturday morning last the boys of the academy turned out in numbers.  There was mighty craic and plenty skills involved so the cool refreshments afterwards were a total necessity – there may even have been a water-balloon thrown after training!
The mighty U9’s travelled to play Passage in a Déise Óg blitz and did really well.
Next Saturday morning promises to be another fun-packed morning at the field with the usual groups in action and the U8’s will be welcoming Ballygunner for a blitz.

U15 Hurling Championship
Last Friday (5th August) our U15 division 4 team hosted Tramore and despite a valiant effort, didn’t come away with a result.  For this team, who are mainly made up of U14 players, this year is about gaining experience that will help prepare for next season when they play on their own age.
The division 1 boys most recently played Ferrybank/St. Saviours and fought really had to take the victory by a single point. Neither of our U15 panels are in action this week but the preparations for the next round will continue.

U13 Hurling Championship
After recording good wins against Kilrossanty (div 4) and Mount Sion (div1) neither of our U13 teams were in action last week, but the work hasn’t stopped. They continue to prepare for the next round of the championship.  On Monday 8th August they’re on the road as the division 4 boys take on De la Salle and division 1 boys head west to play Lismore.  Keep an eye on social media for updates.

Déise Óg Hurling Leagues
The U12 division 5 boys have had a couple of weeks without matches but they line out twice this week in the hope of retaining their unbeaten run.  They will face very stiff challenges from De la Salle (Wed 10th) and St. Pats (Fri 12th).
The division 1 team haven’t had a league match since they beat Mount Sion a couple of weeks ago but they continue to train well and have been hitting the road taking part in tournaments and challenges.
Our U11 hurlers have also been in action recently.  The division boys had a busy week last week as they hosted a strong Lismore team on Tuesday (2nd Aug) but lost narrowly after a really good performance.  On Friday (5th Aug) they to Cleaboy to play De la Salle took the victory with an excellent showing.
Tramore came to the Burgery to play our division 5 team last Friday (5th Aug) in what was a very sporting game with lots of great passing and teamwork.  The boys were ahead for a lot of the game and were unlucky to lose to a late goal from Tramore.
The U11 group as a whole are showing great signs of improvement which is as a result of the hard work and dedication shown by this group.  Well done lads and keep it going!

Academy Update
Our academy continues every Saturday morning at 10am and it’s as busy as ever with blitzes and fun-filled coaching sessions.

The U10’s were hurling down in Ballyduff Lower on Saturday morning.  They had great fun and played great hurling.

The U9’s had a coaching session this week but hosted Ballygunner last week.  They continue to impress and played great stuff.

The U7 & U8’s welcomed Mount Sion and Naomh Brid to the field on Sunday morning in the glorious sunshine.  It was lovey to see the field buzzing with six mini pitches on the go and load of young boys having great craic enjoying their hurling.

The U5 & U6 boys had a very enjoyable hurling session on Saturday morning in the astroturf.  There was loads of fun games like “clear the decks” as well as a few mini matches and plenty water breaks!  It’s great to see the enjoyment from our youngest members and to watch them develop into future hurlers and footballers for the village!
