County U15 Division 1 Football Champions

Congratulations to our U15 players and management team on their fantastic 5-6 to 0-9 victory over Gaultier in Saturday's Division 1 County Football Final played in Kill. This follows last year's win over the same opposition and is great reward for a very dedicated and committed group of players. Well done to all involved.

Féile Hurling
Hard luck to the U14 hurlers who lost out to DLS in the Féile Hurling Final Thursday last on a scoreline of 2-4 to 2-2. With the teams level at half time it was DLS who made the better start to the second half and while the boys gave it everything to get that goal to win it, it wasn't to be. We wish DLS all the best in the National Féile Competition in early June. Sunday gone we were due to play the U14 Football County Final but the game never went ahead due to a bereavement in the Gaultier club. We wait for the board to re-fix.

Under 14
Busy few days ahead for our U14 hurlers & footballers as they qualified for the Féile hurling qualifying final in Cappoquin Thursday April 25th at 7:15pm where they'll come up against De La Salle. After two tough games against Clonea & Brickeys we topped group 2 by winning both games. DLS topped group 1. Winners will go and represent the county in the National finals held in Cork this year. Sunday April 28th the same group of lads compete in the U14 Football County Final against Gaultier in Kill at 12pm. All support would be greatly appreciated for this bunch of lads as they hope to complete a double of sorts.

Under 14
Good luck to our U14 panel who travel to Clonea Thursday evening (18th) as they hope to qualify for the Féile Hurling qualifying final which will be played the following week against the winners of Group 1. In Group 2 we play Clonea & Brickeys. The boys will hope to go one better when they missed out on the Féile Football, losing by a point in a game they could have and probably should have won against Gaultier.
Well done to Billy O Connell (Hurling) and Jake Fitzgerald Drummey (Football) who represented the club at the Féile skills finals held in Carriganore Saturday last (13th) to see who would represent the county at the All Ireland's in Abbotstown Dublin in June. Both went well on the day but came up short in the end.

Féile Football
On Saturday March 30th we hosted the Division One qualifying for Feile Peile na nOg 2019 which will be held in Connacht at the end of June. On a lovely day in Abbeyside we played the first match of the day against Rathgormack which we won after a tough battle. Second game after a 15 minute break we played Gaultier which they won fairly comfortably as our boys tired after putting in a big effort to win the first game. In the third match of the day Gaultier faced Rathgormack. For our lads to qualify for the final we needed a Gaultier victory which they managed but Rathgormack pushed them all the way. On to the final and we threw everything at Gaultier and were losing by a point at half time. Second half the boys put in a their best performance for many a day, we dominated possesion, created many chances but falied to convert and ultimately lost by the point we trailed too at half time. Best of luck to Gaultier as they now go on to represent Waterford in the Feile finals. Our lads can be very proud of their efforts Saturday and when we meet our old rivals in the Us14 County Final later this month we just might get over the line. Big thanks to all who helped out with catering on the day, it was very much appreciated by all.
Panel on the day was: Sean Walsh, Sean Queally, Kieran Cosgrave, Jake Fitz Drummey, Cormac Dunne Fitzgerald, Diarmuid Mackle, Fionn Murchu, Brian Callaghan, Billy O Connell, Cathal Sweeney, Daniel Morrissey, Fionn Dywer, Aodhan Barrett, Darragh Cosgrave, Jack O Donovan, Jake O Donnell, Jamie Mulcahy, Ethan Keohan, Robert Prunty, Tommy Flynn.

U14 Football
Well done to the U14 footballers who qualified for the county final after a hard earned but deserved victory over a very good Rathgormack outfit in Abbeyside on Saturday March 2nd. With the U14 competition knockout this year this could have been our one and only fixture in this grade, therefore we have entered a second team in the U15 championship. Playing with the wind in the 1st half we got off to a flyer, scoring 1-2, but then Rathgormack got going and at half time we were only a point to the good, 1-3 to 1-2. We started the 2nd half well, but again Rathgormack clawed us back & went three up, but our lads took over in the last 10 minutes to win on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-4. We meet old rival Gaultier in the final on April 20th. We start the U15 football championship next before we have the Féile football qualifying at the end of the month.
Panel on the day - Sean Walsh, Sean Queally, Kieran Cosgrave, Jake Fitz Drummey, Cormac Dunne Fitzgerald, Diarmuid Mackle, Fionn Murchu, Brian Callaghan, Billy O Connell, Cathal Sweeney, Daniel Morrissey, Fionn Dwyer, Aodhan Barrett, Darragh Cosgrave, Jack O Donovan, Jamie Mulcahy, Ethan Keohan, Sean Prunty, Robert Prunty, Niall McCarthy, Tommy Flynn. We wish panel members Darragh Walsh and Jake O Donnell speedy recoveries from their injuries which ruled them out the weekend.

County U14 Division 1 Football Champions

Three weeks after winning the county hurling title, our U14 footballers completed the club's first ever county double at this grade with a hard fought 4-8 to 2-5 victory over Gaultier in the County Final Replay at Kill this afternoon. Playing against a very strong wind in the first half, our boys trailed by one point at the break, 2-4 to 2-3. Two early second half goals along with 5 points in the final quarter secured victory. Congratulations to all the players, mentors and backroom team on a fantastic 2018.

Congratulations to our U14 players and management team on their superb 2-14 to 1-10 victory over Ballygunner in the Division 1 County Hurling Final played at Farher Field this afternoon. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half the boys raced into an early lead before going in at the break leading by eight points, 2-7 to 0-5. A fantastic battling second half, where our lads contested every ball, ended with a seven point win. A truly wonderful performance from a great group of players.

World Record
Sunday Sept 30th saw 33 boys & girls from the Abbeyside GAA Club enter the Guinness World Record Books when they participated in the Largest Hurling Lesson which took place in Croke Park. The previous record stood at 577. Tickets scanned we entered the pitch with 40 plus clubs from around the country. The hooter sounded for the start of the record attempt, 20 drills and 30 minutes later the hooter ended the session. Back up to our seats in the Cusack Stand where we waited for the news, the record was smashed when the Guinness World Record adjudicator on the night announced that 1,772 kids trained all at the one time and for the 30 minutes required. Valid attempt and great excitement greeted the announcement, well worth the trip and a great day was had by all. Well done to all who helped make this a great memory for the boys & girls.

U13
The U13's finished their football campaign with a County Final appearance against Gaultier at the Cappoquin GAA clubs grounds recently. On a beautiful Saturday morning the lads put in their performance of the year. Trailing by a point at half time the boys went out and gave it everything in the 2nd half but came up just short against what is a very strong Gaultier outfit. Football finished and the hurling kicked in a week later and our 1st game against Mt. Sion in Abbeyside. Our lack of hurling showed in the 1st half and we were losing 3-3 to 0-4 at the break. 2nd half the boys showed all the fight and spirit that ran Gaultier so close and ended up winning the match by the slimmest of margins, 3-10 to 4-6. Next up is De La Salle away so hopefully we can keep the momentum going and get another two points on the board.
Best of luck to our own Kieran Cosgrave who qualified for the County Final in the U13 Hurling Larry Quinn Skills competition to take place this week.

U12
A couple of games played in the last week with St Mary’s of Clonmel coming to the Burgery on a lovely Tuesday evening for a hurling challenge. The boys didn't play anywhere near their potential and lost out by 4 pts in the end to a strong outfit from south Tipp. Thanks to St. Mary's for travelling.
Then Friday evening we headed to the Mill Field in the Nire to take on Fourmilewater in Round 3 of the Town & Country Hurling League. Our first attack saw us score a goal but FMW fought back to take the lead with 4 pts of their own. With half time approaching the heavens opened and we gained the advantage again to lead by 2 pts. 2nd half and an early goal for us, but credit to FMW, who came back at us again, but we held out thanks to a couple of scores as the game was nearing the end.
Panel for both nights: S Walsh, A Barrett, B O'Connell, F Murchu, J Fitzgerald Drummey, K Cosgrave, S Queally, D Morrissey, D Walsh, J O'Donnell, C Sweeney, J O'Donovan, E Keohan, B Callaghan, J Mulcahy, C Dunne Fitzgerald, D Cosgrave, B Crotty.
Training continues Friday evenings 6 till 7. Next round of T&C is against Ballyduff Upper, June 2nd in Abbeyside.

U12 Tournament
What a day we had on Saturday April 29th. We were invited to the inaugural Paddy Moore tournament held by the Naomh Chartaigh club at the Lismore GAA grounds. 3 games, 72 mins hurling, 9-8 scored 3-8 conceded meant we qualified for the final after matches against St. Catherine's of Cork, Naomh Charthaigh and Cois Bhride, Tallow. Another game, another 40 mins hurling and the final was in the melting pot right up to the last whistle, which saw the host club emerge victors by two points, with our lads fighting back from 7 points down but that piece of luck eluded us preventing us coming away with the trophy. Well done to Naomh Chartaigh and many thanks for the invite. A great days hurling had by the boys with the final being game of the day.

Under 15
Well done to our Under 15 Football team who on Sunday morning of last week at the Dungarvan GAA grounds won the Under 15 Football Western Championship beating the home team in the final after playing very well throughout. We played Gaultier last Sunday in the County Final. We started very well in this game, and although going in at half time a point behind, we were playing some good football and could have been leading if we had taken our chances. The second half it was Gaultier who took their chances and got a couple of goals and as hard as we tried, we couldn't claw back the scoring difference. We had a lot of good performances all the same with Niall Buckley playing super stuff in goal. The panel - Niall Buckley, David Shields, Sean Roche, Colin Foley, Eoin Aherne, Ben O’Donovan, Alec Norris, Rory Aherne, Darragh Slevin, Senan Travers, Jamie Moylan, DJ Kiely, Oisin Hallahan, David Hayes, Eoin Flynn and Philip Coleman. As that was our last game in 2016, we would like to thank the players and management for their efforts throughout the season and it won't be too long before the new season comes around and try and go one better next year.

Parish Leagues – An Overview
Our under-age academy programme finished in a welter of excitement at our club grounds with the playing of the finals of the U8 and U9 Parish Football Leagues. After weeks of playing out the league section games to determine the pairings for the various finals the scene was set for Friday’s eagerly awaited finale. And what an occasion this was. In the truest tradition of our club this was time taken out from our very full club activity schedule to provide the stage for the young lads to enjoy, in the way that only youngsters can do, the playing of football in all of its skill, style, passion and youthful innocence. Here we had the game played in its original exciting splendour. High fielding, long kicking, deft soloing, swift jinks, goal scoring, speedy hand passing, well taken points and of course a plentiful amount of shoulder tackles, hip to hip charges, block downs and more. And all played with typical honesty where fair play was an automatic consequence of well balanced coaching by our coaches who have been working with these lads over the summer and autumn. The combination of well informed coaches and an ever lively bunch of players fills our hearts with hope for the future.
Our club grounds at The Burgery was buzzing with excitement and anticipation as the players arrived in droves bedecked in all sorts of fancy coloured boots, double coloured gum shields, specially designed gloves etc. We had four finals down for decision and we had four brand new cups for presentation to the winners.

The Ballinclamper Cup
This cup has been named after the area of our parish known as” Baile an Clampar”, meaning town land of noise or commotion, which lies in the south eastern corner of the rural part of our clubs area. The area is surrounded by places like Ballinard, Clash, Clonea, Tallacool, Ballinacourty and Ballinageeragh. This area is renowned for the cultivation of its rich soil for produce, in particular vegetables and potatoes. Our club teams over the years have always had an abundance of players from this area.

The Tournore Cup
This cup is named after the location known as “Toor an Óir “o “ Fearann an Tornóraig”  which  refers to the land of the Tornoraig. The original large dwelling where the resident landlord lived known as Tournore House forms a central point in the recently developed Tournore Gardens. This area connects to places such as Duckspool, Coolagh, New Line, Sea Park, Park Lane, is within shouting distance of T.J. Murphy Place, Kyne Park, McCarthy Ville, and of course The Burgery, home to our club grounds popularly known as “the field”.  Many of our club players both at adult and juvenile level hail from this estate.

The Kilminion Cup
Kilminion is a historical landmark honouring Saint Finnian. Cill m’ Inín, Church of Saint Finnian, stands as the gateway to Ballinroad, Ballyrandle, Barnawee, Ballyvoile,Ballymarket, Knocknagrannagh, Garranbane. The site of the long gone church building is of course a sacred burialgrounds. Kilminion and the surrounding area has produced some outstanding players who went on to win many titles with our club.

The Cruchan Cup
This cup honours the area on the western side of our parish.” Crúachan na nDéise” stands tall in the distance as one travels along the road through Strandside North, Moonang, Pinewood, River Lane, Knockateemore, Glidaun, Ballycoe, Joulters Park, Deelish, Tarrs Bridge. Over the years our club teams have been well served by this part of our parish.

These are the cups which our new wave of young footballers played for in the parish league finals.

Four areas linked together by their geographical connection and bonded together by the players and members of our club whose commitment to our youth has given a sense of belonging to all who come along to support the young players.

Players, parents, coaches, officers, grandparents, family, friends, were there on Friday night to witness what was undoubtedly another night to remember.

In the Ballinclamper Cup Final, The Wolfe Tones, led by John Dillon, took the honours with a 5-4 to 3-3 victory over The Fenians after a whale of a game. This battle was full of all that is good in the game of football. I observed one grandparent leaning, leaning, leaning to try and encourage one long range shot that was veering wide to go between the posts.

In the Tournore Cup Final, the bare minimum separated the sides at the end of a rare battle. In the end it was Matthew Walsh’s O’Donovan Rossa who clinched the win with an exquisite late goal, on the score line of 5-2 to 4-4 over the James Kenneally led Michael Davitts. During this game parents were holding on to a collection of track suit tops, jackets, discarded hats etc. all ready for after match comfort.

In the Kilminion Cup final Na Fianna, captained by Louis Simms took an early lead over injury hit Pearses. Although the Pearses re-grouped & took the game to Na Fianna, the absence of Oisin Power proved to be major factor as Na Fianna claimed a deserved victory. Feature of this game was the open style of play as the players played with a free spirit.

In the Cruchan Cup, The Cuchulains had a 4-4 to 2-4 victory over Sarsfields. The Injury hit Cuchulains had the benefit of three U-7 players and this turned the tide in their favour with Conor Byrne lifting the trophy. Blocking down was a feature of this lively game as the players responded vigorously to lively sideline banter and encouragement from mentors and parents.

After the games Joe Cleary, Chairman of the juvenile committee, presented all the players with their trophies and medals in the presence of the biggest crowd seen in the field for quite some time.

On the evening we had yet again a demonstration of the commitment and sense of belonging of the parents and supporters alike to the under- age scene within the club. Once again we had a fulsome supply of teas, coffees, sandwiches, drinks, cakes etc. The fruit table was my favourite with sliced apples, oranges, bananas, pears, grapes etc. It was open table style where all came in, filled up, went about the business on the field of play and came back for more to ward off the cold of the winter chill. And there was plenty for everyone.

Well done to all the players involved who contributed to this memorable event. Players parents, coaches, referees, brothers, sisters, grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends, supporters, officers. On a dry but cold November evening the warmth of your company was a source of inspiration to us all in Abbeyside / Ballinacourty G.A.A. as we remain focussed on giving all our young players a place and an opportunity to enjoy and develop as young players and young members of our parish and community.

You are all welcome to join us on our journey to ensure that all of us unite to ensure that our parish is a place where we all support each other in all of our endeavours.

Academy “Under Lights”
Our Academy completed its 2016 season on Friday evening last. A big thank you to everyone who has helped out throughout the season. It’s been a great year & a very enjoyable & satisfying one for both players & coaches alike.

Already our thoughts are on the new season and on making the Academy experience even better, roll on 2017.

The juvenile club AGM will take place in the clubhouse tonight Wednesday, 16th November at 7.30pm. Parents are invited to come along on the night.
