Academy Update
The U6 boys hit for Bohadoon recently where they enjoyed a football blitz where they had great craic playing the Brickeys, St. Olivers and St. Pats.  This was their second outing in as many weeks having played in Kilmacthomas earlier this month. It’s excellent to see our youngest members taking to the field to represent the club, playing games and having is what it’s all about!

U6s in Kilmacthomas

U8
The U8 hurlers descended upon Carriganore to take part in a blitz organized be Déise Óg.  The boys played teams from all across the county and gave a great account of themselves.

U9
The U9’s were due to travel across the border to play Midleton in a hurling blitz last week.  The bags were packed, the bus was booked and the boys were bulling to go but the heavy downpours on the prior night meant that the Midleton grounds were unplayable so we had to pull the plug.  The boys will now switch to football for the remainder of the year, training Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

U10
Our U10 hurlers represented the club in the annual Frank Meagher tournament, hosted by St. Mary’s of Clonmel.  The lads had a fantastic day’s hurling playing teams from Tipperary, Cork, Wexford & Kildare.  It was a very well run event, played in the spirit of the GAA Go Games.  Well done boys!

U13
The division 1 county hurling semi-final, which had been refixed to Thursday 14th September, fell victim to the orange weather warning.  The match was finally played on Saturday morning in a well turned out Kill pitch.  The Abbeyside boys gave it their all but it wasn’t to be for them on the day.  Ballygunner took an early lead into the wind in the first half and were able to keep edging away.  Our lads started very well in the second half and competed tenaciously with their opponents from the city, but in the end Ballygunner progress to the county final with a scoreline of 3:16 to 1:04.  Special mention must go to Darrach McGrath who was outstanding in goal for the Village.  All of our U13 panel must be commended for the spirit and heart that our boys showed to the end, is testament to their character.  There’s a bright future ahead for this group.

U15
Both our division 4 and division 2 hurling teams were in semi final action last week, playing An Gaeltacht and Micheal McCraith Tramore respectively.  The division 4 match didn’t go our way but the attitude of our boys must be was admirable as they never gave up, even when playing against a team that surely would be able to compete comfortably a division or two higher.  The U15 season comes to an end for the division 4 team now but they’ve done really well through the year and have shown impressive development.
Happily, the division 2 semi final went better for us.  The lads beat Micheal McCraith Tramore with a scoreline of 2:12 to 0:12 and they now face Clan na Geal in a county final on Monday 25th September in Carriganore.  It hasn’t been a straight forward path to the final for this panel and they’ve faced down a wide range of challenges, but they’ve always maintained their focus and have produced some fine performances.  They are very deserving of their place in the county final and we wish them the best of luck!  Please make the effort to go and support the boys, it makes a huge difference and it’s certain that Clan na Gael will have a big following.

Lap the Lake for Luca
John started his 954-mile cycle last Saturday and is planning to finish by the weekend.  In solidarity with him and to raise money for this wonderful cause a number of his friends undertook their own cycle on Saturday when they completed the Greenway Trip to Waterford and back.  Fair play to everyone involved.
There is still time to contribute if you are able to do so.  Please visit the webpage  www.lapthelakefoluca.com where you can see more details.

Lap the Lake for Luca
As many of you are no doubt aware our former player John Foley, now domiciled in Chicago, and his wife Liz suffered a terrible loss earlier this year when they tragically lost their son Luca to Trisomy 18 at the tender age of 5 months.  In Luca’s memory and to raise awareness and funds for Trisomy 18, John made a promise to cycle around Lake Michigan and his 954-mile trek begins later this week.
We’d urge you, if at all possible, to visit the webpage  www.lapthelakefoluca.com where you can see more details and if you are able to donate to this great cause.
John has also appeared on a Podcast in the US talking in depth on the subject. If you have the time to spare it is well worth a watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPe3VZa_URY
Wishing John, Liz and Johnny the very best of luck as he starts out this weekend.

Championship 2023
Our Junior hurlers put in a fine performance in the Western Final on Sunday last. In an excellent game of hurling we produced some fine passages of play but unfortunately game up just short in the end.   Well done to Ardmore and we wish them all the best in their upcoming County Final.
This brings an end to our hurling championships for this season, and we’d like to express our thanks to the 3 managers, Packo, Jimo and Johnny, along with their backroom teams for their efforts during the year.   And of course, to the players who put in the hard slog all year. Thanks for the enjoyment you provided us all.
Attention now turns to the football which kicks off in a few weeks.

Academy Update
Our U6, U7 & U9 continued their fun packed academy sessions on Saturday morning while the U8’s and U10’s played football matches.  Tramore Micheál McCraith were the visitors to the Burgery and played our U10’s in very well contested football matches.  The U8’s had short spin across the Colligan river to Fraher Field where 22 Ballinacourty boys lined out in the All County Football blitz.  Our two teams played Mount Sion, Gaultier and Dungarvan and as you can see from the photo they really enjoyed the morning!

Camogie News
Abbeyside Camogie Junior Championship….the story so far!
The junior girls have played 2 of their championship games, winning both, well done girls! Some commentary from the games below…

Abbeyside V Ballyduff (Sun 27th August)
It was an early start (10am throw in) last Sunday morning when the girls took to the field to play Ballyduff in the first round of the championship.  Both teams had a slow start with no score from play for the first 10 minutes however after this the Village kicked into gear and found their way with an impressive 3-05 to 0-04 lead at half time.  In the second half Ballyduff upped their game and came roaring back scoring an impressive 3-04 in the second half however Abbeyside withstood the challenge to run out winners on a scoreline of 4-11 to 3-08.  It was a soft morning and fair play to both teams for giving their all in an entertaining game.

De La Salle V Abbeyside (Tue 29th August):
Our second championship game came quickly after the first and we travelled to De La Salle’s Gracedieu Ground in Waterford on the following Tuesday evening for a 7pm throw in.  We started brightly this time and played with a strong breeze.  We had a stoppage in the first half due to a shoulder injury to one of the De La Salle girls and hopefully she will make a full recovery and be back playing in no time.  With the breeze we led at half time by 4-09.  We had to make several substitutions due to 4 injuries incurred in the first half.  De La Salle came more into the game in the second half and but for some wayward shooting would have closed the gap on the score board.  We ran out comfortable winners in the end but some of the girls face a race against time to get over injuries to feature for the rest of the championship.

Panel – Kate Cosgrave, Niamh Collins, Siobhan Murray, Laura Morrissey, Dearbhla Beresford, Cara Mullaney, Mischa Lyons, Megan O’Regan, Roisin Briggs, Kate O’Connor, Hannah Walsh, Julie Mulcahy, Cadhla McGrath (Capt.), Laura Cosgrave, Katelyn O’Brien Landy, Saoirse Moynihan, Ava Metcalf, Judith Campbell, Lauren Maher, Evelyn Kiely, Clodagh Fennell, Meabh Kiely, Annie Treen, Maisie Breen, Megan O’Connor, Caoimhe Early, Katelyn Power, Ellen Flynn, Katie McGrath, Eva Morrissey, Megan Foley, Grainne Moore.

Thanks to our Management and coaches Paul, Danny, Ian and Pat.  Thanks to Deirdre, Cyrena, Claire M, Claire C and Sandra for all the help at training / matches and Abbeyside GAA club for having the pitch in great condition.  Thanks to all the supporters who turned out for both games and for those who volunteered as umpires.

Next game up is in Abbeyside versus Clonea on Tuesday 5th Sept. Please come out and support the girls.
