Western U20 'A' Hurling Champions

Congratulations to our U20 players and management team on their 1-15 to 0-15 victory over Fourmilewater in the Western 'A' Hurling Championship Final held in Fraher Field this afternoon. We led by the minimum, 0-8 to 0-7, at the interval before stretching our advantage to six points with ten minutes to go. A scoring burst from our opponents reduced our lead to one point before two late scores clinched victory and our eighth successive divisional title at this age grade. The win qualifies us for the County Final which will take place in the coming weeks.

Charlie Treen, captain, accepts the Western U20 'A' Hurling trophy from
sponsor Seán Byrne and Western Board Treasurer, Billy Devine

U13 County Trials
The U14 county development squads for 2025 were announced at the weekend and from the 170 boys that took part in the trials, it was good to see that nine Abbeyside Ballinacourty boys have made the grade. On the football panel we have Aaron Lacey, Dara Power, Fergus Donnelly, Isaac Walsh, Jamie Drummey, Lochlainn Hurney, Luke Walsh and Ronan Sullivan. The boys that made the hurling panel are Dara Power, Luke Walsh and Tadgh O' Connor. While it's great that the boys have been recognised as having lots of potential, it will take plenty of work and dedication to realise that potential. With the help of the dedicated coaches from Bord na nÓg and the continued support and guidance from our coaches in our club, we look forward to watching the boys develop while enjoying their hurling and football. There was an important message from the selectors to the boys that didn't make the panels this time; there will be plenty more opportunities for boys to be selected in the future. It's important that everyone keeps playing and giving their all, anyone that does will be noticed!

Munster U14 Super 10 Hurling
Our U14 hurlers travelled to Mallow on Saturday morning to take part in the Munster 10-aside competition. Twelve teams (two qualifiers from each county) were organized in four groups of three. The Abbeyside boys faced Ballyheigue (Kerry) and Moycarkey/Borris (Tipperary) in their group. Both games were very competitive and having beaten Ballyheigue in the first match, we lost out to Moycarkey/Borris in round two which meant we didn't progress to the semi final stage. Moycarkey/Borris made it to the final, only to be beaten by our long-standing rivals Ballygunner. It was great for the boys to play the top teams from across Munster, they competed really well and will have taken a lot from the games.

Academy Update
Our 2024 academy with a fun packed final day next Saturday morning. Thanks to all the coaches throughout the year and especially to all the boys who turned up every Saturday. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves and hopefully see you back next year with some new faces!

U13 County Trials
Our own club grounds hosted the final day of trials that will decide who will make up the U14 county hurling development squads for 2025 last weekend. There were concerns about whether it would go ahead at all, given the weather warnings but our pitches were in fine fettle and the young hurlers from all across the county hurled well despite the strong winds. It was nice to see a good number of our own boys doing their best and representing us very well. The crew from Bord na nÓg had things really well organized with over 140 boys playing six matches in the space of three hours. Well done to all that took part.

U14 Super 10 Hurling
Our U14 hurlers had an early start in Aglish on last week. They took part in the Super 10's tournament which is run in a blitz format with 10 aside teams playing 15 minute matches. After a poor start, losing the first match, the boys responded to win all the remaining matches and clinched the overall win in the final after extra time. They now progress to the Munster Super 10's competition in Mallow on November 2nd in what should be an enjoyable day.

Back Row L-R: Luke Walsh, Dara Power, Darrach McGrath, Fionn Connolly, Rian Cliffe, Fionnán Murray, Dara Byrne
Front Row L-R: Theo King, Killian Hagan (C), Donnchadh Callaghan, Fearghus Nee, Natanas Lunskis

Half-time Heroes!
Storm Ashley might have huffed and puffed but he (or she??) wasn't able to make any impact on our under 9 footballers on County Final day. They proudly wore green and white representing our club at half time in the senior football county final. There was plenty of kicking and catching and it was brilliant to see the energy and enthusiasm that they brought to the occasion. We look forward to the future when these boys will be playing for our club as adults on the big stage. Also at half time the county U14, U15 and U16 football development squads were presented to the crowd. There was plenty of Ballinacourty representation across the panels which is testament to the hard work and dedication of the boys and their coaches in the club. Initiatives like the "Half-time Heroes" and presenting the development squads are important to highlight the work that's being carried out in the county and gives our young players some well deserved recognition.

Western Junior 'B' Football Champions
Well done to our Junior 'B' footballers and management team on their hard fought 0-9 to 0-8 victory over Kilrossanty in the Western Final played at Fraher Field this evening. In a game where there was never more than one score between the teams, we kicked a late point to secure our sixth divisional title at this grade and our first since 2015. We now face Roanmore in the County Final next Friday @ 8pm in Fraher Feld.

Senior Football
Our Senior Footballers are back in the county final following a tight and tense victory over Gaultier last Sunday. This was always going to be a tough encounter and massive credit to all the players who dug deep to get over the line by the minimum, 1-09 to 0-11.
This will be our 1st appearance in a final since 2020 and we know a big challenge awaits us in the form of Rathgormack. It’s been a long year for these lads, who have been playing pretty much nonstop since early August and so they could do with all the support we can muster in Fraher Field next Sunday. Please do your best to make it over.

Well Done
To round off what was a great weekend for the parish well done to the Abbeyside camogie team on their brilliant win in the Junior County final on Sunday in Cappoquin. This victory was a long time in the making and is down to an enormous amount of work at all levels. Congrats to all involved.

Academy
Our weekly academy, like many other sporting events, succumbed to the weather warning on Saturday. We'll go again next week so we're looking forward to seeing the boys at the field next Saturday morning from 10am.
Our U9 and U10 avoided Saturday’s bad weather and took to the field in pleasant conditions on Sunday morning. The U9's welcomed James Stephens of Kilkenny to the Burgery and had an enjoyable morning of hurling.
The U10's were on the road to Tallow to take on Cois Brid and St. Mary's (Kill). The boys enjoyed the games and played really well.

U10s in Tallow

U13 Trials
A good number of our U13 hurlers took part in county development squad trials in SETU on Sunday morning. The trials continue over the next two weeks so best of luck to the boys.

U14 Division 1 County Football Final
SETU Carriganore was the venue for the U14 county football final on Saturday morning. The match was squeezed in just before the orange weather warning took effect and was played in dry conditions. It was a tough day for our boys as they faced off against a very strong Gaultier outfit. The physical difference between the two teams was evident and the power of our opponents was too much for our young panel to cope with. It's a testament to the spirit of the boys that they fought to the bitter end. This group have contested four division 1 county finals since U12 and they will continue to play and develop. They're a good group and there will be better days ahead for them!

Academy
Saturday morning at the field was quieter than usual but only because we had lots of boys on the road playing blitzes and tournaments.  The academy will continue well into October so it's not too late to join us if you have a son that's interested.

U5 & U6 Blitz
There was great excitement for our under 5s and 6s at the weekend when we took part in a very well organised blitz in Kilmacthomas GAA pitch.
Our under 5 team wearing the Abbeyside jerseys played against Kilrossanty, Stradbally and Gautier in three very entertaining matches.
The under 6 team donned the Ballinacourty jerseys and played some great football against Portlaw, St. Saviours and Kilrossanty. Playing matches is what it's all about so well done to the boys and also well done to the coaches for facilitating.

U10
The U10 boys headed across the border to Clonmel on Saturday morning to take part in the annual Frank Maher hurling tournament which was hosted by St. Mary's hurling club. Play started at 10:30am and the boys played four rounds of matches against St. Mary's, St. Josephs Doora/Bearfield and St. John's Ballinteer.  It was a really well run tournament and the Village boys had a great morning.  The boys now return to prepare for the final two rounds of the Deise Óg U10 league.

Development Fund
Abbeyside/Ballinacourty GAA Club has been growing at a dramatic pace over the past 10 years with the population of our parish increasing rapidly. We must ensure that we have the best facilities for all our players. We want to ensure that the next generation have the facilities that they need and deserve. We are asking supporters and friends to support this project over the next five years.
