This week's photo comes from 2007 and shows Pat Flynn, County Board Chairman preparing to present the County U21 'A' Hurling Championship trophy to John Kindregan following Abbeyside's 1-18 to 1-17 extra time victory over De La Salle at Walsh Park on December 22nd. Recently, Waterford County Board decided to name this trophy after Tony Mansfield; a much deserved and fitting tribute to our late chairman.

Minor Hurling
Now that the Leaving Cert has finished Minor Hurling training has started again. Our first game is fixed for Monday June 29th away to the Brickies.

Under 14
We played the first round of the Division 1 Hurling Championship on Monday night of last week against Tramore. After playing a nice brand of hurling throughout our lads won the game comfortably on a score line of 5-11 to 0-8.
This weekend this group of young players head for Carnew in County Wexford to take part in the annual national Féile Peil competition where they will represent Waterford. We wish everyone involved well and hopefully all the players involved will remember this outing for many years to come. This a great opportunity for all the players involved to test themselves against some of the best players in the country at this age group and we are all sure in the club that they will do the club and their families proud over the weekend.

Under 12
Our Under 12 team played against Cois Brid on Friday night last and everyone involved acquitted themselves well.

Under 9
Our Under 9 team have just finished their Town and Country League in hurling and football. In total they played 8 matches and every one of the group improved as the league went on. This group also travelled to Killeagh last weekend to take part in a hurling blitz. The improvement that was seen from the first game this group played this year to the blitz last weekend was plain for all to see and a big thank you must go to the mentors involved at this age group.

Mark Gorman and Donncha Enright
This Tuesday night Abbeyside plays Tallow in Round 3 of the County Senior Hurling Championship in Lismore. Our photo this week shows current Senior Hurler Mark Gorman and current Senior Hurling Manager Donncha Enright after an underage football match with the club in October 2000. The two lads are a prime example of the loyalty shown by so many to our club down through the years.

Juvenile Notes - 17th June

Under 6 and 7
On Saturday morning last we took part in an under 6 and 7 blitz against Fourmilewater at the Burgery. In glorious weather everyone from both sides acquitted themselves well and a good day was had by all.

Under 8
The under 8 season is currently in full swing with lots going on. We played in the second night of the Western Football tournament in Clashmore on the 3rd June and a great night was had by all. We host the final night of this tournament on this Wednesday night the 17th June at 18.30. The group also had two teams in Carriganore for a hurling blitz last Saturday morning and all the lads played some great hurling on the day. The Tuesday night wall ball sessions are really paying off for this group. A big thank you must go to all the parents who bring their kids out to training and providing transport to the blitz games. Play and Stay games for the under 8 team start with hurling on Monday the 22nd in Dungarvan. As always new members are always welcome to join at any stage throughout the year.

Under 10
Wednesday the 10th we continued the U10 Western Football Tournament. Host club for the night was Kilrossanty, so we headed off to Lemybrien on a beautiful summers evening. First up was Affane, and not since we beat Tramore by one point to nil in the minor football county final of 1959 did Ballinacourty record the same score line in a game, but that was the score on the night. Cormac got the point for us. Our 2nd game was against Clashmore. A much closer game than the 1st night saw us lose by four points. In to the B final again on the night and we met a much stronger St. Olivers outfit than on the first night we played them and we lost out by a couple of goals. Final night will be played in Cappoquin on Wednesday 24th where we will bring our full squad. Panel on the night: Conor Gough, Jake Fitzgerald Drummey, Jake O Donnell, Cathal Sweeney, Ethan Keohan, Jack O Donovan, Sean Walsh, Cormac Dunne Fitzgerald, Darragh Walsh, Sam Phelan. Missing on the night was Brian Callaghan, who we wish a speedy recovery from a broken collar bone sustained recently. We also wish his brother Sean well who also broke his arm during the past week.

Under 13
We had a great win last Saturday in the Under 13 Football Championship Final against Gaultier. This was a great team performance full of determination, skill and a never say die attitude.
We started very well with Daire and Alec winning the midfield battle and kicked 7 unanswered points in the first 10 minutes, then Gaultier got going and scored three points. We then scored the first goal of the game where DJ Kiely slipped through the defence to finish to the net. Then Gaultier really came into the game and brought the game back to a two point game .We exchanged points in the second half with the opposition, and the game was very tight when Ben O Donovan rose high above the goalie to fist the ball to the net.
Our defence were playing really well, with Niall, Daniel, Jamie, James, Sean and Colin cutting out several scoring chances. The forwards of Willy, Eoin, DJ, Tadgh, Ben and especially Jack battling very hard and taking their scoring chances. We then introduced Oisin, Joe and Rian as legs were getting tired.
As the final whistle blew it was all square so extra time was awaiting us. The extra time was five minutes a side and Gaultier got first run and scored two unanswered points in the first half. On the changeover we moved the ball very quick and up stepped Rian Walsh to find the net and within two minutes we had another goal from Daire Slevin. We defended very well for the last minute and ran out deserving winners. Our goalkeeper David played very well between the posts and stopped several goal chances. Our captain Niall Buckley received the trophy on behalf of the panel and thanked the opposition for a very sporting game. Every panel member whether playing in the final or not contributed to this fantastic win.

Our Under 14 footballers took part in the County Final last weekend. After a hard fought battle against a very well balanced Gaultier side it was the city team that took the spoils by three goals. Juvenile Notes - 3rd June

Under 13
Our under 13’s played in the western semi final Tuesday of last week against Kilrossanty in Abbeyside. We played some good football on the night to record a 5-8 to 0-11 victory and qualification for the western final. The final was played in Fraher Field last Saturday against the Nire. This was the third occasion this year that both of these teams met in this grade, with the Nire coming out on top on both previous occasions. This didn’t faze our boys and they started well and we were leading at half time by a goal. If the second half with the aid of a slight breeze the team applied more pressure on their opponents to record a 3-6 to 2-3 win. This was a great display by all the panel of players. Next up here is a county final on Saturday 13th June against Gaultier.
Panel: David Byrne, Niall Buckley, Sean Sullivan, Jamie Moylan , Daniel Treen, James Cowler, Darie Slevin, Alec Norris, Ben O Donovan, Colin Foley, Eoin Flynn, Tony Dwyer, Stephen Lake, Tadbh Collins, Callum Beresford, Ronan Foley, D J Kiely, Rian Walsh, Joe Flynn, John Joe Quealy, William Beresford, Oisin Riordan, Conor Kent, Sean Óg Flynn, Louis Cambell, Jack Riordan.
We would like to wish DJ Kiely a speedy recovery from his recent injury and hope to see him back on the playing fields soon.
The Under 14 County Final takes place on Saturday 6th June at 11:45 against Gaultier in Fraher Field. Please come out and support this team and we wish everyone involved well.

Under 10
Last Wednesday night (May 27th) we went to Ballinameela to play in the U 10 Football tournament. First up for us was St. Oliver's and the boys won fairly easily, but the tables were reversed when we played Clashmore, where we came out the wrong side of a one sided game. That meant we qualified for the B final on the night. Our opponents were the Brickeys. A tight game saw us level at half time but in the 2nd half we got the goals that swung the game in our favour. We sit on 4 pts in the group with two more nights to go. We travel to Kilrossanty on June 10th with the other half of our squad. Panel on the night was Jack O Donovan, Sean Walsh, Billy O Connell, Sean Queally, Jamie Mulcahy, Kieran & Darragh Cosgrave, Daniel Morrissey, Fionn Murchu, Aodhan Barrett.

Bag Pack
We held our annual bag pack over the weekend at Garveys. This was a very successful event and everyone involved in the club would like to thank everyone who gave up of their time to help on the day in any small way. Also a big thank you to Garveys SuperValu for allowing us to have this event on their premises year in year out.

Best of Luck
Best wishes are sent to all in the club who are sitting their Junior and Leaving Cert exams this week.
