Academy Update
Saturday morning saw the completion of the Well Kids Programme for 2023.  Over the past weeks we’ve had huge amounts of sport, activity and fun all lead by our enthusiastic coaches.  The Well Kids programme is often the first interaction a child will have with our club and it’s a fantastic way to introduce our games as well as begin the development of fundamental movements, agility, coordination etc.  Each of our little stars received a medal, a certificate and a goodie bag as a reward for their participation.  We look forward to welcoming them back in to our academy next season.

U7
Our U7 group headed for An Rinn on Saturday morning where they played a football blitz.  The young Ballinacourty boys put in a great display of movement and kick-passing all while having great craic.

U9
This week it was the turn of our U9 hurlers to provide the half time entertainment in Fraher Field.  The boys cheered on our senior hurlers while they waited for their chance to take the field at half time.  Even though it was for only 10 minutes, all 28 of our boys hurled their hearts out with hooks, blocks, speedy pick-ups and quality striking.  They had a ball.  They returned to their role as spectators for the second half and were very vocal in the last few minutes as our seniors rattled the net. Even though the senior result didn’t go our way, the U9 boys enjoyed their moment in the lime light and will no doubt grace Dan Fraher’s field in the future themselves at adult level!

U10
The U10’s continued their busy schedule on Saturday morning.  They welcomed Killeagh to the Burgery and played a series of hurling matches.  The boys hurled well and had a very enjoyable morning.

U11
Our under 11 teams were in action last Friday evening with games against Tramore and Brickey Rangers as part of the under 11 football leagues. Great to see big numbers come out in support for all the teams. Well done to all the lads involved.

U12
Our U12 hurlers travelled to Middleton to play in the annual James O’Brien tournament. The lads hurled well and were very competitive in all the matches and had a great day out.  On Monday (28th August) they pick up the big ball and travel to Rathgormack for a re-fixture of their championship match that was called off due to storm Betty. The boys are in action again on Friday evening as our division 1 and division 4 teams travel to Stradbally and St. Olivers respectively.

U13
Mount Sion were the visitors on Monday 21st August as our U13 hurlers played round 6 of the division 1 hurling championship.  The boys put in a good performance and took their scores very well as they took the victory with a scoreline of 4-20 to 2-08. They advance to the county semi-final where they will meet Ballygunner on Monday 4th September at 8pm in Carriganore. Best of luck to the boys! They really deserve their place in the semi’s having put in a huge amount of work and dedication throughout the season. This is born out in the quality of hurling that they are playing.

U14
Again this week we congratulate members of our U14 boys group as they take honours at intercounty level, but this time was hurling.  Seán Óg and Jack were part of the Waterford team that won the annual Sonny Walsh tournament while Alex, Coleman and Dara did very well for the other Waterford team in the tournament.  Well done to all five Abbeyside boys in representing the club so well.

U15
Monday 28th August is a long-awaited date for our U15 hurlers.  It’s been quite a while since the last round of the championship, but they’ve been keeping busy with training and challenges.  We wish them the best of luck as our division 4 team take on St. Pat’s in Colligan and division 2 travel to Carrickbeg to take on St. Mollerans.  Keep an eye on our social channels for results.

U8
You'd normally associate the phrase "half time show" with the Super Bowl but the half time entertainment in the Abbeyside vs Dunhill senior hurling championship match was brought to you by our mighty U8 hurlers. The boys played Na Gaeil in front of a sizeable crowd and really enjoyed the experience. It was the first of many appearances for these boys in Fraher Field and we look forward to seeing them develop into the future. Half time games like this are a fantastic initiative from Deise Óg and the county board as creates fond memories and a sense of belonging for our young hurlers of the future.

U10
It was the big ball this week for the U10's as they welcomed our near neighbours St. Pat's to the Burgery to play a series of football matches. The boys are really starting to display excellent teamwork and played with style and determination. Keep it up boys!

U12
Much to the frustration of our U12 footballers, Storm Betty put paid to all fixtures on Friday evening.

Academy Update
Literally every corner of the club grounds were being put to good use on Saturday morning.  We had the “Well Kids”, who were playing fun games and exploring at the very beginning of their journey with our games and we also had fantastic groups of boys from U6 right through to U10 who were being guided by their coaches while having great craic playing hurling and football.
We had two clubs from outside the county visiting us.  The U9’s welcomed St. Mary’s of Clonmel while the U10’s hosted Douglas from Cork.  The young boys in the blue and gold gave a great account of themselves and they really enjoyed the challenges from our visitors.
As well as the dedicated coaches and supportive parents, there’s another important part of our Saturday morning academy and that’s the volunteers that are always on hand with the juice and treats after training for our young players.  We have a wonderful team to fulfil this important role and at this stage they’re all well aware of the tricks that might be played by a young lad in order to try and get a few extra custard creams!  Joking aside, it’s a lovely treat for the boys after training and we appreciate the volunteers that facilitate this.

U11
Our U11 hurlers were on the road on Saturday to take part in a hurling tournament hosted by Fr. O’ Neill’s in Cork. The village boys played against teams from Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny. They had a wonderful day of hurling and came home having won the shield final. Thanks to Fr O’ Neill’s for organising and hosting us on the day. A big thanks to all the supporters that travelled on the day and cheered on the lads.

U12
While the U12’s have started their football championship, they play Rathgormack and Ardmore (both away) on Friday, they still haven’t put down the hurleys yet.  They played two good challenge matches last Friday against Ballygunner with both matches ending in a draw.

U13
The U13 hurlers hosted Passage on Tuesday evening in round 5 of the division 1 hurling championship.  It was a tense affair as both teams are contesting for a place in the county semi-finals.  After a bit of a shaky start, the boys showed real grit, determination and good hurling, to claw their way back and win on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-09.  Mount Sion are the visitors in the next round on Monday (21st Aug).

U14
Congratulations to Owen Morrissey and Colm Kiely who were part of the “Waterford White” team that won the Jim Power Memorial plate final on Saturday.  They beat Limerick and Waterford Blue (including their clubmates Charlie Gleeson, Jack Hurney and Sam Hodge) on the way to the final where they played Offaly. They came from 7 points down in the final to score late on, and snatch the victory. Missing from the photo is Micheál O' Grady who's still recovering from a long term injury. Well done to all our boys!!!

U15
The U15 hurlers continue to prepare for the knockout phase of the county championship.  They are scheduled to play St Molleran’s in Carrickbeg (div 2) and St. Pats in Colligan (div 4) on Monday 28th August.  They boys have been putting in a great effort through out the year and we wish them the best of luck!

The field was buzzing with activity on Saturday morning as our young hurlers and footballers honed their skills under the guidance of with dedicated coaches. All our pitches and astroturf were being put to good use, from the youngest boys who continue their Well Kids programme, up to our U10 boys who are preparing for the Go Games football blitzes.
The U8's had a later start than usual though. They welcomed Ballygunner, Tramore and Clan na Geal and played out a series of fun hurling matches, cheered on by a big crowd. After sharing refreshments with their friends from the east of the county, the village boys then decamped to Fraher Field to support our senior hurlers. It was great to see so many boys decked out in the blue and gold to support the seniors and no doubt a fair share of these U8 boys will be lining out for the club at adult level in the future! Well done to all.
