There have been one or two small tweaks to the makeup of the Club officers and committee since the AGM. The full listing of same for 2020 is below –

Jack the Joker

There was great excitement in Minnie’s Bar on Sunday evening last when the jackpot of €5,600 was won. The lucky winner was Louise O Donnell who chose card 40, which when turned was the elusive Joker. Also, on the night both Eddie O Halloran and Dermot O Shea won €25. Congratulations to Louise, we hope she will enjoy her winnings, and massive thanks to all who continue to sell or buy a ticket each week. It is the club’s primary income stream and we are very grateful for your support. The show, of course goes on this Sunday when the draw moves to O Connors with a jackpot of €2,000 up for grabs.

Intercounty

Storm Dennis wreaked havoc on intercounty fixtures last weekend with the Waterford Senior Hurling team’s game versus Limerick one of those to fall victim to the rain and high winds. Hopefully there will be no such problems this Sunday when Galway visit Walsh Park and we’d like to wish club panellists Conor Prunty and Neil Montgomery all the best. Prior to that on Saturday afternoon the footballers make the long trek west to Yeats’ County to take on Sligo. All the best to Brian Looby, James Beresford and all involved. Finally, congratulations to Colin Foley who was named joint captain of the county U-20 football team. Colin and his teammates are in action this evening, Wednesday 19^th, versus Clare and hopefully we will have good news to report next week.

Fitzgibbon Cup

On Wednesday evening last Neil Montgomery joined a select group of club players who have captured one of the premier third level competitions. It was fantastic to see Neil continue his great early season form and make such a huge contribution to the UCC victory. All in the club pass on our congratulations on this fantastic achievement.

Membership

With the playing season commencing very shortly we ask all players to get their membership paid quickly. Also non playing members can pay their membership in the coming weeks. Membership can be paid to Kevin Tobin. Kevin will be in the field on Saturday morning between 10.30 and 11.30.

Our club bingo continues in the CBS Hall this Sunday night where the jackpot is €1200.

Club Notes - 12th February

Intercounty

On Saturday evening, last in weather conditions reminiscent of the Great Flood, Brian Looby and James Beresford were part of the Waterford Senior Football panel who lost out by the narrowest of margins against Wexford. The lads now have a well-earned two week break before making the long journey to Sligo on the 22^nd.  Meanwhile Conor Prunty and Neil Montgomery will be with the Senior Hurling team who travel to Limerick this coming Saturday evening. We wish all involved the best of luck. 

Membership

With the playing season commencing very shortly we ask all players to get their membership paid quickly. Also non playing members can pay their membership in the coming weeks. Membership can be paid to Kevin Tobin. Kevin will be in the field on Saturday morning between 10.30 and 11.30.

Jack the Joker

Our ever-popular Jack the Joker fundraiser continues this Sunday night in Minnie’s Bar where the jackpot will be €5600 as on Sunday night David Whelan was drawn out of the drum and chose card number 46 which when turned over was not the joker, but he did win €50. David Collins and Paul Lennon won €25 each.

National Draw

The club are once again participating in the GAA National Club Draw. The purpose of this is to assist clubs in their drive to raise much needed funds with Croke Park covering the cost of some fantastic prizes including a new Renault Clio 4 Expression Car, Travel Voucher worth €2,000, All Ireland Hurling & Football packages, shopping vouchers and a host of other great prizes. The tickets are €10 each and can be purchased from any committee member.

The beauty of the draw for us is that Abbeyside Ballinacourty retains the proceeds from all tickets sold by the Club.

Club Notes - 5th February

Intercounty

There were a number of club players donning the county jersey in both codes over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon Brian Looby and James Beresford were in action in Aughrim where the Senior Footballers lost out to Wicklow.  At the same time in Mullingar Conor Prunty and Neil Montgomery were part of the Senior Hurling team that defeated Westmeath. The footballers are out again next Saturday when they take on Wexford in Fraher Field. We wish all involved the best of luck.

Club Notes - 29th January

Intercounty

There were a number of club players donning the county jersey in both codes over the weekend. On Saturday evening Brian Looby and James Beresford were involved with the Senior Footballers in their narrow loss to Limerick whilst Conor Prunty and Neil Montgomery both performed admirably for the Senior Hurlers in a great victory over Cork in Walsh Park on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are in action again next Sunday against Wicklow and Westmeath respectively, and we wish all involved the best of luck. 

Membership

With the playing season commencing very shortly we ask all players to get their membership paid quickly. Also non playing members can pay their membership in the coming weeks. Membership can be paid to Kevin Tobin. Kevin will be in the field on Saturday morning between 11.00 and 12.00.

Our ever-popular Jack the Joker fundraiser continues this Sunday night in Minnie’s Bar where the jackpot will be €5200 as on Sunday night Bronagh O Donovan was drawn out of the drum and chose card number 10 which when turned over was not the joker, but he did win €50. Babs Murray and Pat O Brien won €25 each.

The previous week as a mark of respect to the late Jimmy O Leary the draw did not take place until Monday evening when The Walsh Family won €50 after being drawn out and picking card 8. Babs Kiley and James, Jack & Joey both won €25 each.

Club Notes - 22nd January

Sympathy

On behalf of all in the club, we would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family and many friends of the late Jimmy O'Leary, Murphy Place who died suddenly last Thursday night. Jimmy's involvement with our club goes back decades and indeed continued right up to this week when he was out in Ballinroad where our adult players were continuing preparations for another championship season. He took no greater delight than in seeing all club teams in either the blue and gold or green and white achieve success on the playing fields of Waterford and beyond. He gave so much to Abbeyside / Ballinacourty but also always acknowledged what the club gave to him. The first to arrive at training and the last to leave, Jimmy's contribution to our club was nothing short of immense. From filling water bottles to organising jerseys, from turning on lights to locking gates, training and match days will never be the same again. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Also we remember the late Vinny O Mahony who passed away last week. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends.

Jimmy O'Leary RIP

Club Notes - 15th January

Waterford GAA Awards

The above awards took place in Lawlors Hotel on Friday last and there was a sizable club contingent present given we had two players nominated for awards on the night, Brian Looby (Adult Footballer of the Year) and Colin Foley (Young Footballer of the Year).

Unfortunately, Brian was out of luck with the award going to Rathgormack’s Conor Murray, however to the delight of those club members present Colin was announced as the winner of his category.

This of course is a great personal honour for a dedicated and skilful player who has been a mainstay of many underage teams over the years, including the County Champion U-19 football team last year. Wholehearted congratulations to Colin from all in the club as he becomes the 7^th Abbeyside / Ballinacourty player to win this prestigious award. We look forward to seeing him don the jersey with distinction for many years to come.

Also, over the course of the evening it was wonderful to see the 1959 team honoured, which it must be said was a wonderful gesture by the organising committee. This of course included our own Austin Flynn and it was a tremendous privilege to spend some time with and be in the company of these great men.

This was an excellently run event and credit to all involved. Hopefully we’ll have reason to attend again 12 months hence.

Shane Briggs and Mary McGrath won €25 each.

Sympathy

On behalf of everyone in the club we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late Vincent Byrne, The New Line, Abbeyside. Vincent spent many years playing with the club and was indeed a member of the Ballinacourty team that 1^st achieved Senior status following victory over Rathgormack in the 1965 Intermediate County Final. Subsequent to hanging up the boots he remained active in the club and was a mainstay of fundraising initiatives for many years.

Also, our thoughts are with the respective families of Breda Veale and Teresa Dalton who both passed to their eternal reward this week Both families play crucial and active roles within the club and our thoughts are with all concerned at this difficult time.
