Under 10
After a busy few months the playing year for the U10's is nearly over. August & September saw us participate in the division one hurling league against Lismore, Fourmilewater, Dungarvan & St. Pats. A couple of weeks ago we travelled to Carriganore for matches organised by the Games and Development Committee. Here we played De La Salle, Cois Bride & Clonea. Finally, weekend just gone Ballybacon-Grange from Tipperary came to Abbeyside with their U10 panel where we divided the squads to play two matches. A great afternoon's hurling was had by all and thanks to Ballybacon-Grange for coming down, to our parents who helped in anyway (serving teas, moving goals, bringing 'goodies' etc) Thanks to James for refereeing and Audrey & Niamh for assistance they provided on the day. To all, much appreciated. I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate my fellow coach, Richie and his U13 Camogie panel on their county final win over Gaultier at the weekend. Well done to all. Training for the year will continue Friday's 6 till 7 with us going into the hurling wall soon.

Nights Under Lights
Please note, next Friday 23rd October, to mark the end of the season for some age groups, we will be hosting a "Nights under Lights" for our underage groups of U8, U7, U6 & U5. This will give the players an opportunity to have a game under lights and experience the atmosphere of it.  As a result there will be NO training for any of these age groups on Saturday 24th.  This will be the last training for the U5 & U6 age groups. U7 will continue on Saturday morning until mid / end November (weather permitting). U8 will continue on Friday nights to end of November (weather permitting). Mentors will keep you posted via texts so please ensure you are receiving same, if not speak with your mentor ASAP. Lastly, we would ask all travelling to the pitch on Friday night to be vigilant when driving down to pitch and parking. Please adhere to the instructions of those who will be controlling traffic as it will be dark especially on departure. See you all from 7pm to 8pm and as usual the teas and coffees will be available.

Under 15 Hurling
Our Under 15 hurling team took on near neighbours Dungarvan on Sunday morning last in the Western Championship. After a slow start our boys settled down to play some fine hurling on the morning and come away with a comprehensive victory. Next up for this age group is against Lismore on Sunday morning next at 11:00am.

County Senior Football Championship Update

After five rounds of the County Senior Football Championship, Ballinacourty, The Nire and Clashmore have finished level on 8 points each. The result between the teams was supposed to determine position in the group but with each team having beaten another, the sides could not be separated. Scoring difference could not be used as De La Salle gave The Nire a walkover in their final game. As a result, play-offs must take place to determine the final placings in the group. Following an open draw, Ballinacourty and Clashmore will play the first play-off game. The loser of this tie will finish third in the group. The winner will go on to play The Nire with the victor in this match claiming top spot in the group, the loser ending up second. All three teams, irrespective of these results, will play in the Quarter Finals of the championship.

Senior Football
On Tuesday night last we played Clashmore in our final game in the group stages of the Championship in Fraher Field. As scoring difference can’t be used to decide who wins the group a number of play-off games are now required between the three clubs.

Sympathy
On behalf of all in the club we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Paul Foley, who passed away last week. Paul was a fine player of both codes in his day and many of our players would have come against Paul during his distinguished playing career, whilst he handled a number of our matches since he took up refereeing in recent years. Again we send our sympathies to the Foley and O’Sullivan families and to all in Ballygunner GAA Club on Paul’s death.
We would also like to extend our sympathies to John Condon, An Rinn on the tragic death of his wife Jacinta Condon on Sunday last. John is of course a popular figure on the referring circuit in West Waterford and his grandson is a member of our Juvenile section.  After the death of her nephew David during the summer our thoughts and prayers are with John and his family as well as the Houlihan family at this very difficult time for them.

Juvenile Notes - 7th October

Minor Hurling
Pride and place this week goes to our minor hurling team who on Friday night last captured their second Minor ‘B’ Hurling title in a row. Played before a large attendance at Carriganore on Friday night last our lads showed true grit and determination to see off an excellent and well prepared Clan na Gael side. The match was played under the lights on a good night for hurling and our lads played some lovely hurling in the first half to lead at the break by four points. On the resumption however it was the team from the east that dictated affairs and two early goals put them in the lead with 15 minutes remaining. However our boys dug deep in this crucial period of the game and were rewarded with a goal struck off the hurley of Eoin Kiely. The game ebbed and flowed till its conclusion with our boys lucky to hold on at the end by two points. Great scenes of jubilation were evident at the end of the game when team captain Conor Prunty raised the trophy aloft. While the game was very close throughout this was a deserved victory for this very dedicated group of young men. They have now added the Minor B Hurling trophy to the A Football title that they won earlier in the year. It is a great achievement indeed. A big thank you must go to all the players and mentors involved in this victory. We would like to also thank all the supporters who travelled on the night. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces out in force for this important game. Hopefully it will be onwards and upwards for this group of players in the near future. Also thanks must go to Pat O Brien for supplying light refreshments after the game. Thank you to all.

Camogie Notes - 7th October

Under 16 All-Ireland
Congratulations to Shauna McGrath who was a member of the Waterford panel who won the Under 16 All Ireland title recently. Shauna is the first member of our club to win an All-Ireland Camoige medal and we wish her every future success.

U13
The girls have been busy in the last month with matches played against Gaultier, Tallow, Cappoquin and Roanmore. The games ended in victory for Abbeyside with a County Final place the reward for the hard work and skill shown by the girls.
The club would like to thank Power Transport for their kind sponsorship of socks for the final.
We would also like to wish the Abbeyside U13 footballers all the best in their county final next week-end.

Under 8 and 10
Training for these groups has now ended for the winter season and we would like to thank all those who helped with transport, First Aid etc at all the training sessions and blitzes etc that we took part in. A big thank you to Sean Kiely who came on board with this group this year and his coaching expertise helped in no small way in improving our membership.

Sponsored Walk
Our sponsored walk from Clonea to Ballinacourty was a huge success and well done to all members, parents and sponsors who helped to raise nearly €2,000. A special word of thanks to Kevin Regan and Frank Sweeney, who were our main sponsors.

Future
With Waterford winning All Ireland Camoige titles this year at Under 16 and adult levels there is a big opportunity for camoige to prosper and there is no reason why our club cannot be at the forefront in years to come. With more parents / supporters putting their shoulder to the wheel our club can become one of the leading clubs in Waterford in the years ahead. Finally thanks to Abbeyside / Ballinacourty GAA Club and to groundsmen Jimmy O’Leary and Michael O’Donovan for their continued support and commitment to our club.

County Minor Division 2 Hurling Champions

Congratulations to our minor hurling panel and management team on their thrilling 1-16 to 2-11 victory over Clan na Gael in the County Division 2 Final played at Carriganore this evening. A tight match throughout, the lads fought for every ball in the final ten minutes to retain the title won last year. This has been an exceptional year for this dedicated group of players having won the County Minor 'A' Football title back in May.
