This song appeared in the Dungarvan
Observer in 1966 after our senior hurlers 2-10 to 1-4 win in
the Sargent Cup against Iar-Dhéise, a selection from the Tallow, Shamrocks and
Ballyduff Upper clubs.
'ABBEYSIDE SENIOR HURLING TEAM'
[Air: “The Men of the West”]
There’s a dear little
village in Ireland,
So beautiful, lovely
and fair,
With grand sea air
all around it;
What a joy it is to
live there!
It’s so pleasant to
go for a ramble
Or to take a wee journey
by car,
And to meet all your
friends at the local
As they travel from
near and far.
You have heard of
great statesmen and heroes
Renowned for their
fortune and name;
But our own darling
team from the Village,
Oh! they have greater
powers and fame.
Well, you just have
to see them in action
And their nice manly
ways while they play,
In a clean, sporting
manner befitting
Our clever young men
of today.
They have beaten the
pick of Iar-Dhéise,
The Brickeys are next
team to meet,
But when our lads
step out to oppose them
’Twill be victory and
not defeat.
So “Good Luck” to our
loyal Abbeyside boys,
Those stalwarts so
faithful and true,
Who kept up the good
name of the Village,
As they don the old
Gold-and-Blue.
And whoever they meet
in the final
I know they will
never give up,
But will hurl with
the strength that is in them
And bring back that
grand Sargent Cup.
