Under 19 Hurling Western Champions
Pride of place this week goes to our Under 19 hurlers who beat Saint
Carthage’s in the Western Final last Sunday at the wonderfully appointed Gold
Coast venue. Playing divisional finals in December is never ideal but
conditions on the day were, if a little on the chilly side, more akin to what
would be expected in mid-summer. Allied to the excellent playing surface both
teams went on to produce an open, exciting game with no little skill on display
from both sides.
Saint Carthage’s opened the brighter and it took our lads a little time
to settle into the game but once they did we took a firm grip on proceedings
and 2 well taken goals gave us a 7 point half time lead. The 2nd
half followed a similar pattern with our opponents storming out of the blocks
and before long had reduced the deficit to a single point. However, credit to
our team, there was never any panic and we gradually reasserted our dominance
and began to get on top. A number of nicely taken scores, including 2 further
goals, gave us a comfortable 7 point margin at the final whistle on a score
line Abbeyside 4-14 Saint Carthages 2-13.
Neil Moore in his capacity as Western Board chairman presented the cup
to team captain Ben Flynn, who gave a fine acceptance speech.
There were some excellent individual displays on the day, but primarily
this was a great team performance with every player contributing to a superb
victory. Well done to all involved, from the players to manager Neil Moore and
his team of mentors, Conor Prunty, James O Mahony, Joey Mullin and Eoin Kiely,
all of whom it will be noted are current players. It is heartening to see adult
players take such an active role in the development of younger teams within the
club and long may it continue.
We now await the Eastern champions in the County Final with the hope
being this will be played before Christmas.
Panel – Eoin Fitzgerald, Patrick Fitzgerald, Johnie

AGM
Our Club AGM took place last Friday night in Abbeyside School hall with
a sizable attendance ensuring a lively debate on a number of topics.
Jonathan O’Donovan produced an excellent and comprehensive Secretary’s
Report which covered in great detail all elements of the clubs activities in
2019. Having been received very favourably by all those present and following a
discussion on areas raised therein the report was approved.
Chairman Michael Briggs gave a wide ranging address which again touched
on everything that has been happening over the past 12 months. He thanked in
particular all his fellow officers, committee members, players, team
management, everyone working away in the background and all those who continue
to contribute to the ongoing development works at our club grounds. On the
playing side he congratulated our Junior C Hurling County Champions, whilst
also reflecting on a few near misses and some disappointments in the other
grades.
As Michael has stepped aside as
Chairman it is only right at this time that we thank him and the Vice Chairman
Michael Cosgrave for their sterling work over the past two years.
The last item on the agenda was the
election of Officers and the committee for 2020. With Neil Moore standing
unopposed for the position of Chairman he was ratified for the coming 12 months
along with the other Club Officers and new committee. The incoming Chairman
gave a brief address outlining plans for the year ahead and with that the
meeting was called to a conclusion.
The new committee then convened for a
brief meeting where, amongst other items, it was agreed that the appointment of
team managers would be dealt with over the coming weeks. The intention being to
have this finalised prior to Christmas.
The following are the officers and
committee members for 2020
Chairman: Neil Moore
Assistant Chairman: Michael Ferncombe
Secretary: Jonathan O’Donovan
Treasurer: Pakie Hurney
Membership Officer: Kevin Tobin
PRO: Paidi Shields
Committee: Bernard Gorman, Eddie O Halloran, Michael O Donovan, Joe Cleary, Frank
Sweeney, Jim O Mahony, Timmy Organ, Danny McGrath, Ian Kiely.

Sympathy
On behalf of all in the club, we would like
to offer our deepest sympathies to the O'Connor family, Limerick and Abbeyside
on the tragic death of Breffni O'Connor in Italy on Saturday morning last. The
O’Connor family have been great servants of our club for many years and Breffni's
cousins continue to play for our club today. Breffni's father, Liam regularly
travels back to the Village to watch our club teams in championship action and
has always been a great supporter of every and any fundraising initiative we
have undertaken. Indeed, Liam was a chief organiser of the very successful and
enjoyable sponsored cycle from Limerick to Abbeyside a few years ago. When our
Féile teams travelled to Limerick in recent years or whenever our Senior teams
travelled to Limerick for challenge games, Liam would ensure that all the
arrangements were in place and the teams never wanted for anything once Liam
undertook the arrangements. Once again we send our condolences to Liam and
Kathleen and their family at this most difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.

Junior Hurling
Pride of place this week has to go to our Junior hurlers who captured
the County title on Sunday last with a thrilling win over Naomh Pól in Walsh

the first half there were some nervous moments in the second half before they
emerged victorious on a scoreline of 1-14 to 2-8.
After the game Nicky Dee accepted the cup on behalf of the team, where
he dedicated the win to Mick Collins. We
congratulate the panel and management team on this great win and look forward

County Junior 'C' Hurling Champions
Congratulations to our Junior 'C' hurlers and management team on their hard fought 1-14 to 2-8 victory over Naomh Pól in the County Final at Walsh Park this afternoon. The foundations for this win were laid in the first half which saw the lads leading by eight points at the break. They then had to withstand a late second half Naomh Pól rally before securing a thoroughly deserved win. After a series of tough defeats over the last two weekends, it's great to come away with some silverware to show for a long, hard year.

Sympathy
On behalf of all in the club we would like to
extend our deepest sympathies the family and wide circle of friends of Laura
Cliffe who tragically passed away last weekend.
As news of Laura’s passing spread throughout the Village on Saturday
morning there was sense of shock and disbelief at the news, coupled with an outpouring
of support for her family. Along with Suzette, Laura had turned their local
business Cafe Bliss into a thriving success and it was a hub of activity in our
community. A lover of many sports Laura would fly our club colours, Waterford
or Ireland flags proudly from the top window in Café Bliss, with a New Zealand
flag also making an occasional appearance! Laura was extremely popular with her
customers, with many Saturday or Sunday morning breakfasts turning into
informal club gatherings where the weekend’s matches or events would be
discussed in depth. Laura supported all the teams in our club, both mens and
ladies, taking great interest in and getting great pride from the performances
of her nieces and nephews in the club jersey.
Cliffe’s Field was of course our home for many
years before we moved to our current location and Laura's father Larry was a
hurling missionary in our juvenile section for many years as he trained
thousands of youngsters at our Saturday morning coaching sessions. To this day
Larry and Laura's mother Margaret run our weekly bingo whilst her brothers
Damien and Raymond played for the club for many years. Laura's sisters Sandra
and Maria are some of our most loyal supporters with her nieces and nephews
maintaining the proud family link to the club to the present day.
All who knew Laura will miss her warm and
generous personality, as she was always great company in Cafe Bliss and other
social settings. Whilst she will be missed by us all, it is nothing compared to
the deep sense of loss her loved ones are going through at this time.
Once again we send our deepest sympathies to Laura's
family but especially to Suzette, Larry and Margaret and to Sandra, Maria,
Damien and Raymond and all her nieces and nephews.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
