Club Notes - 11th April

Under 21 Football County Champions
On Sunday last our under 21 footballers got the year off to the best possible start and gave all in the club a boost in moral with a great victory in the County Under 21 Football final as they defeated Roanmore by ten points in Walsh Park. Whilst the margin of victory was decisive in the end it was only in the final ten minutes of the game that the team pulled away for victory as up to that stage the result was in the melting pot. Leading by three points at half time the team had to show great heart and no little skill to emerge as winners as Roanmore got a great start to the half with a goal from a penalty. However as they have shown all the year this team possess great character and they displayed this in the final 20 minutes of the game to win our first County Title at this grade since 2008.
A special word of thanks must go to the huge band of supporters who turned up to support the team which gave the lads a great lift. It is greatly appreciated that so many were prepared to travel to Walsh Park on Easter Sunday to support this team. After the game John O’Leary presented the cup to team Captain Michael O’Halloran who spoke eloquently on behalf of the team. Michael tanked the team selectors Eddie O’Halloran, Laurence Hurney, Timmy Organ, Neil Moore and Michael O’Donovan as well as Michael Ferncombe. He also paid tribute to the entire panel of players who had put so much hard work into training since January. Michael gave special mention to Colm O’Hare who is unavailable for selection but who had played with the team for many years whilst he also thanked our sponsors Jack O’Hare, John Queally, Brian and Alice O’Connor and Jack Murphy. Before thanking Roanmore for a sporting game he dedicated the win to Jack Lacey who had played in all the games to date in this Championship, and of course to Pa, Mary and Mollie Enright.
On returning to the parish the team were treated to a fabulous meal in The Gold Coast and we thank the staff for their hospitality.
